Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best performance in an otherwise bad movie?
Joshua Rothkopf (@joshrothkopf), Time Out New York
There’s a Cult of Val (Kilmer, obviously) that I proudly belong to. Mainly it revolves around movies like “Real Genius,” “Top Secret!” and “Heat,” all excellent movies that don’t fit the parameters of this question. But you really don’t know Val until you’ve made your peace with Oliver Stone’s beyond-awful “The Doors.” The apocryphal anecdotes around Kilmer’s deep dive into Jim Morrison are insane: insisting that no one look him in the eye on set, wearing the same leather pants for months,...

This week’s question: This past weekend saw the release of “Indignation,” which has been rather faithfully adapted from the Philip Roth novel of the same name. In the hopes of shining some light on what makes for a great adaptation, is there a film that you believe is better than the book from which it was adapted?
Christopher Campbell (@thefilmcynic) Nonfics/Film School Rejects
This is a difficult question as I admit I haven’t read a lot of the books of movies I love (unless we count my childhood interest in novelizations), so I can’t think of any favorite films I...

The Great Gatsby didn’t take down Iron Man 3 at the box office, but its $51.1 opening weekend was significantly higher than analysts predicted. Audiences — heavily adult and female — were likely drawn to Baz Luhrmann’s surrealistic re-imagination of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel and the film’s hip anachronistic soundtrack, but it’s no secret what really sold this movie: “Three little letters,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of domestic distribution. “L-e-o.”
Gatsby’s strong debut was a reminder that Leonardo DiCaprio is a Hollywood superhero — even if he’s never played one on the silver screen.

I've illustrated this post with the new Toy Story 3 character, Ken. Because... I just can't get over it. What?! There's also a new trailer.
And Your Little Blog, Too has a fine piece on one of my favorites, A Place in the Sun
Dear Jesus skewers one of my least favorites, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers
Film Doctor thoughtful notes on Bright Star
Low Resolution finally sees that Jane Campion effort too. Why did it take people so long to get behind it. Argh. Maybe it should have opened in the Spring/ Summer and worked the Away From Her/Erin Brockovich/La Vie En Rose/Moulin Rouge! type of Oscar track?
Empire Untitled Spider-Man Reboot will be in 3-D. Look, I loved Avatar but every film does not need to be in 3D. How long will this craze last? Until a couple of mega flops arrive I guess.
