Much anticipated sequel to the successful 2022 Hong Kong film doesn’t make the best use of its gifted ensemble
Structured around a series of family dinners that spiral into chaos, Sunny Chan’s Hong Kong comedy Table for Six was a record-breaking box office hit on release, thanks largely to a charming ensemble cast. Most of them return for this highly anticipated sequel, also directed by Chan and conceived as a special lunar new year vehicle. While the first film was almost entirely set in a single apartment, number two is much more ambitious in scope: this time, instead of dinners, it is a series of weddings that escalates into a whirlwind of comical mix-ups.
Reprising their original roles, Louis Cheung and Charm Man Chan star as half-brothers Bernard and Lung, who suddenly find themselves thrown into wedding preparations with their respective long-term girlfriends Monica (Stephy Tang) and Josephine (Ivana Wong). Here,...

A victim of Covid 19, this Chinese New Year film missed its scheduled February date but it finally hit the cinemas in early September 2022. Premiered at the Udine Far East Film Festival in April garnering the Best Screenplay Award, it made its way to the 21st New York Asian Film Festival in July. However it did exceptionally well after its local release and took in over 77 millions and eventually became the 3rd highest-grossing domestic film in Hong Kong.
A follow-up to his “Men on the Dragon” (2018) starring Francis Ng, Chan's light-hearted comedy follows the life of Steve Chan (Dayo Wong Chi Wah) and his two brothers. They live in a large apartment which used to be a charsiu (BBQ pork) factory owned by their late parents. Since he is the eldest brother, he regards himself as the head of the family. After deciding it’s time to seek help with his cleaning business, despairing Chak meets the zanily upbeat Candy
Set in Hong Kong during the early days of the pandemic, Lam Sum’s tender drama pictures a city haunted by economic and political uncertainty. Storefronts are plastered with foreclosure and bankruptcy notices, while talk of moving abroad hovers amid everyday conversations. Plagued by faulty equipment, the one-man sanitary service operated by world-weary Chak (played by Cantopop star Louis Cheung) is on the verge of breaking down. When asked by his ailing mother if God is telling him to give up the business, Chak self-deprecatingly describes himself as a speck of dust, so tiny that even the deities would not take notice.
Reluctantly hired as an extra pair of helping hands on his cleaning rounds, single-mom Candy (Angela Yuen) enters Chak’s life like a whirlwind of chaos. With her impossibly...

Set somewhere between a film about covid, a romance, and a realistic drama, “The Narrow Road” is actually a road movie into the lives of the poor during the pandemic, as much as a rather intriguing portrait of two people who try to survive against all odds, in an environment that seems to be as much against them as possible.
The Narrow Road is screening at Five Flavours
The impact of the pandemic, particularly in small businesses, was quite significant, and Chak is facing it in all its glory, as he ends being the sole employee of his small cleaning business, not to mention almost broke and with an intense back pain. Without time for a social life, his only interaction is with his elderly mother, who spends her time betting on horses, although still manages to help her son financially on occasion. Eventually, Chak is forced to seek an assistant due to his situation,...

Family comedy “Table For Six” has set an opening day local record for a comedy film in Hong Kong, to the relief of producers who were forced to digest a releasing delay of six months.
The Sunny Chan-directed film opened Wednesday in Hong Kong and Macau at 61 theatres, playing a total of 608 sessions. That gave it an accumulated box office of HK1,986,701.
“Table for Six,” which chronicles a family’s holiday gathering where food, love, friendship, jealousy and relationships are on the menu, had originally been planned as a dish to be served at Chinese New Year, in February. And producers had assembled a cast of major Hong Kong and regional talents, including Dayo Wong, Stephy Tang, Louis Cheung, Ivana Wong, Lin Min-Chen and Chan Charm Man.

A cleaner and his young neighbor form an unusual bond in The Narrow Road, a Hong Kong-set drama world premiering at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Director Lam Sum paints a vivid picture of life for low-paid workers in the city, skillfully incorporating elements of the Covid pandemic, which struck before filming began.
Louis Cheung plays Chak, a hard worker who runs a modest but efficient cleaning company serving local businesses and homes. His neighbor Candy (Angela Yuen) is struggling to provide for her seven-year-old daughter, and begs Chak for a job.
While hardly a natural at cleaning — which is teased for gentle comedy value — Candy assists Chak just enough to keep the gig, though it helps that she has an incredibly cute daughter. The three gradually develop a friendship that verges on codependency, but...

Hong Kong’s Oscar submission is an entertaining feel-good biography of So Wa-wai, the national sporting hero who won 12 medals in five Paralympic Games from 1996 to 2012. Focused on the powerful bond between the disabled runner and his fiercely dedicated mother, “Hero” injects just enough gritty drama about the champion’s financial and emotional battles to prevent the story being overwhelmed by sugary sentiment applied liberally elsewhere. The first film directed solo by “Love Off the Cuff” writer Jimmy Wan struck gold in Hong Kong cinemas in August and is likely to be the silver medalist behind “Anita” as top-grossing local film of the year. “Hero” sprinted onto Netflix in the U.S. and other territories on Nov. 5.

There’s something immensely satisfying about a prison escape movie. A group of outlaws planning a breakout only for it to all go to hell come freedom day is a reliable formula for success. Part of what makes such movies so entertaining is the loveable crooks behind the plotting, which is precisely what you get with Ho Pong Mak’s “Breakout Brothers”. The prison-break film combines the best of action and comedy to be a thrilling romp full of memorable characters.

The only living soul present at the murder is a beautiful blood-red parrot that blurts out seemingly random words.

There's an addictive retro feel to this pacy Hong Kong crime thriller from Fung Chi-Keung that sees a hapless cop unexpectedly working in tandem with a jewel thief - even if some may be disappointed that the hotly touted parrot witness of the film's title only flies in for a cameo moment here and there.
What better way to show that officer Larry Lam (Louis Cheung) is both sweet and bungling than by having him in hock to a low-rent criminal over a cat shelter he's set up within the first few minutes before landing him, face first, in the murder victim at a crime scene? It's there he also meets the parrot - screeching, "Help, help" - which he comes to believe can help him identify the killer.
Fung knows how to get an audience hooked, setting up all this quirkiness - complete with Larry's stickler boss Yip (Philip Keung) and.

Being a parent is almost never easy. But probably one of the scariest times is when you’re expecting for the first time. All those nagging fears, insecurities, excitement, apprehensions and outside interference can really do a number on the mind when it is at its most vulnerable. “Lazy Hazy Crazy” director Luk Yee-sum delves into exactly these issues with her breezy sophomore effort “Baby: The Secret Diary of a Mom To Be”.
“Baby: The Secret Diary of Mom To Be” is screening at Fantasia Festival
Seeing her best friends suffering and based on her own rocky relationship with her mother, career woman Carmen has decided she never wants to have a baby and live a happy life with her professional basketball player husband Oscar. Her mother-in-law Margaret, however, isn’t making things any easier with her well-intentioned meddling ways. So, when one day, she finds out that she is pregnant,...

The eyes of the world were pointed at Donnie Yen after the end of the spectacular “Ip Man” saga. His choice of an action comedy as a follow-up might be seen as a bit of a surprise, but “Enter the Fat Dragon” blends the well-known elements, like the breath-taking, laws-of-physics-defying action, humor, references and a bit of covert social commentary into an efficient time-killer about the good cops, bad cops and even worse gangsters in Hong Kong and Tokyo. It premiered in the Chinese New Year slot earlier this year, but its theatrical run was impaired by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this type of film is equally suitable for video formats, where we also caught it.
The title is taken from the cult Sammo Hung’s 1978 action-comedy about an overweight Bruce Lee fan getting involved in a fight with a gang of thugs that threaten his family,...

Screenwriter for the likes of Stephen Chow (“Shaolin Soccer” and “The Mermaid”), Chih-chiang has since then been exploring, in the director chair, very diverse genres including a musical and a contemporary western. His fourth feature as director/writer, dwells upon the mix of crime, police procedural, noir and a touch of psychology, reminiscent of past Hong Kong Cinema traditions. “A Witness Out of The Blue” puts together a convoluted script and a stellar cast helmed by ubiquitous Louis Koo to achieve mixed results.

Chicago – Hong Kong writer/director Fung Chih Chiang makes his second appearance at Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema (Apuc) as Season Ten continues on March 11th, 2020. Season Ten of Apuc will run for the next five weeks, until April 9th. Each week will be dedicated to highlighting films in different Asian territories – Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. Heading for release in Hong Kong on June 29, Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight follows what happens when "a monster from Lung's favorite animation appears in the city ... and turns people into zombies." That's from the rather lengthy plot summary at IMDb. These are running kind of zombies, not George A. Romero's slow walkers, so this may not be for traditionalists. But if you can roll with that, it looks promising. Here's the entire description (spoilers may follow): Lung (starring Michael Ning) and Chi-Yeung (starring Louis Cheung) are two eccentric hot-blooded young men leading a devil-may-care life. They deem themselves as heroes that can save the earth. However, Lung can do nothing about things in life that don't work out as he wishes: he has...

There is a thrilling selection of Chinese-language titles at Filmart this year. Liz Shackleton picks out some of the most promising.
With very few Hong Kong or mainland Chinese sellers making the journey to this year’s European Film Market in Berlin, Filmart offers a chance for buyers to catch up with the Chinese-language titles that will be rolled out in the region for the rest of the year.
After serving up the biggest film of the Chinese New Year holiday — Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan and directed by Stanley Tong — China’s Sparkle Roll Media has launched a Hong Kong-based sales arm that is selling Ding Sheng’s reboot of the A Better Tomorrow series.
Other high-profile action titles new to market include Distribution Workshop’s Extraordinary Mission, from the creative teams behind the Infernal Affairs and Overheard series, and Huayi Brothers’ crime drama Explosion, starring Duan Yihong.
