Back in 1967, The Beatles told us, “All You Need Is Love.” Back in 2004, writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka brought the world a novel called All You Need Is Kill, which served as the basis for the 2014 Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow… and I could understand why the title was changed for the movie, as All You Need Is Kill never sounded quite right to me. A better version would be All You Need Is Death – and that’s the title the makers of an upcoming folk horror movie have decided to use for their film, which is set to receive a VOD and limited theatrical release on April 11th. With that release date just a couple weeks away, a trailer for All You Need Is Death has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

It was almost 10 years ago when Warner Bros. Pictures released Edge of Tomorrow, a sci-fi thriller from director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) that starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Edge of Tomorrow was acclaimed at the time of its release as a more intelligent than usual, character-driven and kinetic sci-fi action movie. Yet the studio, producers, and director ended up fighting over the movie’s title before it was even released, a classic Hollywood marketing conundrum that may have hurt the film’s chances.
Cruise plays Maj. William Cage, a public relations officer for the military in a future where Earth is trying to stave off an alien invasion. Forced to accompany troops on a combat mission, Cage is killed—but finds himself reliving the same day over and over again afterward. Desperate to change the outcome, he realizes that his fate is tied to that of the heroic Sgt.

Director Doug Liman‘s time loop / alien invasion sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow (watch it Here) did not set the box office on fire – in fact, compared to another notable under-performer starring Tom Cruise, it made less money than 2017’s The Mummy, on a higher budget. But that hasn’t stopped talk of a sequel from popping up every now and then over the ten years since the film’s release. Liman has let it be known that he has been working on a script, and Cruise’s co-star Emily Blunt has even previously said that she has read the “really promising and really, really cool” script. That was a few years ago… and in a new interview with Blunt, she has said she still thinks an Edge of Tomorrow sequel could be good.

What if there was no tomorrow? That's an existential question posed not only by the 2014 time loop film "Edge of Tomorrow," but also by its sequel's complicated status following the original's successful release. Ever since 2015, director Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt have spoken at various times about a sequel movie getting off the ground. At one point, Liman had said that the sequel would be entitled "Live Die Repeat and Repeat" (referencing the movie's ersatz title/subtitle) and that the film's co-writer Christopher McQuarrie would also return. He even claimed that the concept was so good that "it's gonna revolutionize how people make sequels."
Alas, a myriad of obstacles have gotten in the way in the intervening years between that statement and now, with Blunt saying in August 2023 that she's still interested in making a sequel, but doesn't know when or how it could happen. Given the project's stalled status,...

Doug Liman's epic sci-fi adventure "Edge of Tomorrow" (aka "Live Die Repeat") remains one of the great underappreciated event films of the last decade. Featuring solid performances from Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and a sharp script from Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth, the 2014 spectacle is a compelling and even enthralling piece of entertainment.
The story, based on the novel "All You Need is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, follows public affairs officer Major William Cage (Cruise), who inexplicably gets caught up in a war between humanity and an invading alien force. After dying on the battlefield, Cage wakes up the day before and quickly realizes he is somehow reliving the same day over and over again, resetting each time he gets killed. He then teams up with Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Blunt) to figure out the cause of his condition and the best way to utilize it against the aliens.

This article contains spoilers for Re/Member.
Nothing says Japanese horror films like supernatural scares, urban legends, and grudge-bearing spirits. Eiichirō Hasumi, director of Assassination Classroom and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, attempts to bring all these elements together in Re/Member, a movie adaptation of Karadasagashi (Body Search), a manga spread over 17 volumes and 153 chapters.
The plot of Re/Member follows the age-old movie formula of time loops with its core theme leaning towards puzzle-solving. Japanese cinema is no stranger to playing with time, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time being the most well-known of the bunch, though this film takes on a far darker approach to the genre. In case you haven’t read the manga, six classmates are haunted by an unforgiving spirit and tasked with the retrieval of its body parts. Fail to find those parts and the day resets, bringing about your untimely and brutal death.

Tom Cruise isn't just one of the reigning kings of the box office. In recent years, the actor has also proven himself king of the box office revival, pumping fresh blood into his own decades-old franchises with sequels that have garnered praise and raked in returns across the globe. In 2018, the sixth "Mission: Impossible" film became the series' most lucrative, bringing in nearly 800 million worldwide (per Box Office Mojo). In 2022, Cruise one-upped himself with "Top Gun: Maverick," a sequel to a thirty-four-year-old action film that earned an astounding 1.48 billion at the global box office.
The 60-year-old action star has clearly got the juice, and the only question now is where he'll apply his cinema-saving stardom next. He's already set to return to the role of Ethan Hunt again in this year's "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1," a spectacle-filled follow-up that's set to include car chases, a fight atop a speeding train,...

Emily Blunt revealed on the “SmartLess” podcast that she started crying after trying on her 85-pound “Edge of Tomorrow” suit for the first time, which led co-star Tom Cruise to tell her: “Come on, stop being such a pussy, ok?” It was all in good fun, however, as Blunt added, “I did laugh, and then we got through it.”
Cruise and Blunt headlined the Doug Liman-directed 2014 action movie, in which they play soldiers in the future fighting against an alien race. Cruise’s character finds himself stuck in a time loop and forced to relive the climactic day in which the aliens win, unless he can reverse the outcome.
“We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way,” Blunt said on the podcast. “When you hear the word ‘tactile,...

It’s the sequel idea that just won’t die. Doug Liman’s ambitious, brain-bending sci-fi actioner “Edge of Tomorrow” might have started its theatrical run with iffy domestic returns, but the Tom Cruise- and Emily Blunt-starring alien invasion thriller has only increased in status since its original summer 2014 release. With that affection came the inevitable: plenty of demand for a sequel, the rare case that finds both a film’s fanbase and its creative team equally as eager to ante up for a fresh adventure.
Rumors have persisted for years that a followup was in the offing, but with stars Cruise and Blunt busy with other franchises (including “Mission: Impossible” and “A Quiet Place”) and a seemingly tough-to-crack story, “Edge of Tomorrow 2” has remained in a tenuous position. But is that changing?
“I think there’s an idea, that he says is great,” Blunt said in a recent interview with IndieWire.

One of the best directors on social media is hands down Christopher McQuarrie. The “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” filmmaker often uses Twitter to share screenwriting tips, provide director’s commentary to his films or movies he’s watching, and offer up his honest thoughts on the industry. A recent McQuarrie Twitter thread found the director musing on logic and explanations in films with otherworldly elements.
“‘Ghostbusters’ understands that logic is overrated,” McQuarrie wrote. “They knew exactly what needed explaining and what didn’t. Most importantly, the protagonists are just trying to make a living. They only become traditional heroes in the final act.”
McQuarrie had hoped to be just as limited on explanations when it came to his 2014 science-fiction action movie “Edge of Tomorrow,” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. McQuarrie adapted Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Japanese novel “All You Need Is Kill” for the Doug Liman-directed movie. The writer shared...

Warner Bros. has decided to bring back Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and the original director, Doug Liman.
Looks like Edge of Tomorrow's tagline (and eventual alternate title) "Live. Die. Repeat." was rather prescient.
After years of rumors and hopeful quotes from the original's stars, The Hollywood Reporter has officially confirmed that Warner Bros. is developing a sequel to the beloved 2014 sci-fi action film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.
According to THR's report, Cruise and Blunt are slated to return as is the original film's director, Doug Liman. All three's involvement is contingent upon them liking the final script for Edge of Tomorrow 2. The first film's script was penned by Christopher McQuarrie (Cruise's Mission: Impossible buddy), and the Brothers Butterworth (Jez and John-Henry - two British-sounding lads if there ever were two). The Edge of Tomorrow 2 script is currently in the...

“Edge of Tomorrow” is officially getting a sequel.
Warner Bros. is moving ahead with its follow-up to the Tom Cruise-Emily Blunt time-travel tale “Edge of Tomorrow,” with “Invention of Lying” scribe Matthew Robinson writing the script.
The 2014 original, directed by Doug Liman, grossed $370.5 million worldwide, including $100.2 million in the U.S. “Edge of Tomorrow,” based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s 2004 Japanese novel, “All You Need Is Kill,” takes place in a future where most of Europe is invaded by an alien race.
Cruise portrays a military public relations officer with no combat experience who’s forced by his superiors to join a landing operation against the aliens. Cruise’s character finds himself in a time loop that sends him back to the previous day every time he dies. He teams up with Blunt’s special forces soldier to improve his combat skills each day.

On your feet, maggot! Deadline is reporting that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is beginning to pick up steam, after the sci-fi sequel recently plucked Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse to pen the script.
They’ll be working under Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie, who will pick up the reins from Doug Liman after penning the original sleeper hit. Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s mind-bending novel All You Need is Kill, which was once the title of Liman’s actioner during its formative days, Edge of Tomorrow thrusted Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt into a full-scale alien war, with the remnants of humanity desperately scrapping for survival.
That all-hands-on-deck tactic resulted in waves upon waves of foot soldiers being deployed against the mimics, a seemingly invincible alien race mobilized by a hive mind hellbent on world domination. But here’s the kicker: Tom Cruise was able to exploit a scientific...

A weird truth: Even in the midst of the current comic book gold-rush, major studios can't seem to get a good anime or manga adaptation off the ground—although the influence of those works can be seen everywhere. This weekend's Big Hero 6 is based on a Marvel comic that's heavily (perhaps even problematically) inspired by anime and manga. As tangentially connected to the art form as Big Hero 6 is, could it be the harbinger of a sea change in Hollywood's approach to manga and anime? Tackling this question can be kind of tricky—after all, "anime" and "manga...

★★★★☆Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's All You Need is Kill, Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow (2014) is a rare beast: an actioner with an abundance of charm and wit. Contorting the classic hero's journey of redemption and sacrifice into a high concept allegory for how history has a tendency to repeat itself, the film sees Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt facing destiny head-on. In an attempt to win the PR battle in a war long lost, Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is removed from his comfy orator role and thrown into the frontline against a formidable alien foe. Enclosed in the biosuit the Allies hope will win the war, Cage is shipped across the Channel to storm the beaches of Normandy in one last big push against the enemy.

Anybody who has played computer games (and who hasn’t?) knows how useful the restart option is, or the more annoying forced respawn from death. To die at a tricky part of the level and just be able to restart at a checkpoint or recently saved position helps you adapt your strategy and retry what you did wrong, till you finally make it past that tough part and reach the end of the level. This is exactly what Tom Cruise has the ability to do in Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow.
Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, an arrogant PR man for the human war machine fighting against the alien invasion that has overtaken most of Europe.

Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, an arrogant PR man for the human war machine fighting against the alien invasion that has overtaken most of Europe.

If you were to go see The Giver this weekend without knowing a thing about the book it was based on, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s some sort of suburban Hunger Games ripoff. In reality, Lois Lowry’s 1993 novel predates just about every modern Ya film franchise, from The Hunger Games to Divergent to The Maze Runner—you might even say it established the authoritarian dystopia motif that’s in vogue these days. Unfortunately, all of those other books beat it to the big screen. Instead of looking like the groundbreaking, thoughtful story that’s in the novel,...

Tom Cruise's blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow has been rebranded as Live Die Repeat for its home entertainment release.
The time-loop thriller, about a soldier who relives the same day over and over, has been noticeably rebranded in time for its Blu-ray, DVD and digital debut this October.
"Live Die Repeat" was prominently used in the film's marketing campaign, but has taken on larger significance now that Doug Liman's sci-fi blockbuster has finished its theatrical run.
In addition to the Blu-ray cover, the iTunes entry for the film lists its title as Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow.
During its early stages of development Edge of Tomorrow was called All You Need Is Kill, the same name as the Hiroshi Sakurazaka-penned novel on which it was based.
Edge of Tomorrow earned more than $360 million (£268 million) at the worldwide box office, and was greeted positively by critics. However, the...

The live-action adaptation of Akira has just received a new writer. Deadline reports that Dante Harper has been brought on to work with director Jaume Collet-Serra on the latest draft of the script. Ironically, Harper's biggest credit as a writer is one he doesn't get...credit for. It was Harper's spec script, based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's "All You Need Is Kill" that gave us the wonderfully under-appreciated gem Edge of Tomorrow. Despite his script being what created that film adaptation, he got passed over in the credits by the three writers that took later passes at the screenplay.
Regardless, Harper is now set to collaborate with Collet-Serra on a new take of the beloved title Akira. The property began it's pop culture life as a Japanese manga by Katsuhiro Otomo back in 1980. In the years to follow, it would get an anime adaptation, and video games based on it.

Has it really been well over half a decade since Warner Bros. began adapting Akira into a live action film? It has, proving that Hollywood often moves as slowly as Congress! But there's some light at the end of that long tunnel...
Per Deadline, Dante Harper (the first Edge of Tomorrow scribe who recently did a draft on Vin Diesel vehicle The Last Witch Hunter) is currently working with Warner Bros., Appian Way, Mad Chance, and director Jaume Collet-Serra on Akira.
There's nothing more than that to go on, but something is better than the nothing we've had since this past February, when Collet-Serra provided an update. And Harper seems like a good choice considering his experience adapting All You Need Is Kill, the manga by Hiroshi Sakurazaka that became Edge of Tomorrow, a film that this writer feels didn't garner near the attention it deserved. (There's always home video.

The folks over at Viz Media were kind enough to hook me up with the first volume of All You Need Is Kill, thanks to the digital-first debut that hit last week. This is Takeshi Obata's (Death Note, Bakuman) manga adaptation of Japanese military science fiction breakthrough light novel of the same name by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. When the alien Mimics invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his fifth iteration, he gets a message from a mysterious ally – the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji's escape or his final death? Sound familiar? Many of you probably know this story as the more recent Edge of Tomorrow,...

There was never a time in my life where I thought I'd need to compare a war-is-hell science fiction action film to "Groundhog Day," but I guess there's a first time for everything. Based on the light novel “All You Need Is Kill” by Japanese author Hiroshi Sakurazaka, "Edge of Tomorrow" is the strange yet no less compelling lovechild of "Groundhog Day" and "Starship Troopers," with the high-concept premise and humor of the former and pulpy action of the latter in tact. It may not be as smart as it could've been in the broad strokes, but a clever, well-acted thrill ride like this doesn't really need to have its head fully in the game, now does it? Not to...

×Could be considered somewhat spoilery. No major points are given away, in our humble opinion, but later stages of the movie are discussed. Read at your own risk.
Edge of Tomorrow is so niche that it may have trouble ever finding a wide enough audience, and the names involved, and critical reaction may not make a difference. Not only sci-fi, but time travel sci-fi, it’s also loaded with a lot of mechanized, weird alien death and destruction. That certainly isn’t the kiss of death, but Edge of Tomorrow is also a movie that doesn’t care about any of that action, and instead wants you to think a lot, and have a laugh.
Aliens have invaded Earth, and they’ve taken over most of Europe. Cage (Tom Cruise) is basically a propaganda officer in the U.S. military, but when he arrives in London, General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson...

The film Edge of Tomorrow is a sci-fi actioner that stacks up pretty well as a blockbuster. All the bells and whistles are there for your enjoyment – explosions, aliens, underdog hero who happens to be a human with a great smile, and Tom Cruise is on board too!
The film was directed by Doug Liman who directed The Bourne Identity (2002), Mr. And Mrs. Smith (2005), and Jumper (2008). He is used to getting pretty actors all roughed up and endangered. The screenwriters of Edge of Tomorrow are Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. McQuarrie wrote The Usual Suspects (1995) and two other Cruise vehicles: Valkyrie (2008) and Jack Reacher (2012). The Butterworth brothers have a handful of minor credits and both worked with Liman on Fair Game (2010). The original story is from All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

It’s summertime, school’s out, and the days are long. That means you’re going to need books. Books to read while lying in the sun on the beach. Books to read at that boring family reunion your parents dragged you to. Books to read while you’re in line for the latest midnight screening, which, oh by the way, is probably based on a book. Here is your summer reading list of books that are currently making their way to the big screen.

Edge of Tomorrow is a fantastic Tom Cruise movie, as well as a clever and surprising sci-fi adventure. But most importantly, it’s the ultimate manifestation yet of video-game cinema. Not because it’s based on a game — on the contrary, the source material of Doug Liman’s extraterrestrial extravaganza is Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s 2004 graphic novel All You Need Is Kill. Rather, it’s because no film has ever so fully and enthusiastically embraced both the hallmark forms and content of games. The tale of military press-secretary William Cage (Cruise), who finds himself on a Normandy Beach–esque battlefield during an alien invasion and, after dying, winds up replaying that same day over and over again, Edge of Tomorrow practically begs for superficial comparisons to that modern classic of comedic do-overs, Groundhog Day. Yet it’s not Bill Murray who’s the real inspiration for Cruise’s repetitive saga but,...

"I was training to climb Mount Everest," Doug Liman says, motioning to the slim treadmill desk tucked into the corner of his Tribeca office space. "It was originally for a project I was going to do with Tom Hardy [about Everest climber George Mallory]…compared to the movie I was making, the thought of scaling a mountain seemed restful." The 48-year-old director starts shaking his head slowly. "It was like, 'Well, there won't be any exo-suits, there won't be any aliens, there won't be the challenge of trying to get an honest performance out of...

How do you fight an enemy that already knows exactly what you’re going to do? You throw a Tom Cruise missile at them, someone who doesn’t know himself what he’s going to do. That’s what Brendan Gleeson's General Brigham does in Edge of Tomorrow, the first and possibly best blockbuster action film this summer.
Directed by Doug Liman (Jumper, Mr and Mrs Smith, The Bourne Identity) and scripted by Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) based on the Japanese comic All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Edge of Tomorrow begins at the end of a war to save the planet from a mysterious alien invader. Bill Cage (Cruise), a Us Army talking head public-relations officer who’s never seen a day of...

Every new Tom Cruise movie these days almost demands immediate analysis about what his latest means for him and his career. In the case of Edge of Tomorrow, the science-fiction war movie that weds Starship Troopers with Saving Private Ryan with Groundhog Day, it means a lot of fun. ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ review: Tom Cruise, the Last Movie Star, makes latest alien invasion movie ‘exceptionally entertaining’ (photo: Tom Cruise in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’) Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s popular illustrated novel All You Need Is Kill was originally published in 2004, and has seen a number of adaptations and republications, including serialization as an even more popular manga in Japan and, translated from the original, an American graphic novel recently republished as Edge of Tomorrow. The latter is a better title for a movie, particularly a summer blockbuster featuring the last movie star, the full depth and breadth of his star powers at work in every scene — as he is literally in every scene — turning what would have been a serviceable military sci-fi adventure movie into an exceptionally entertaining sci-fi drama that reminds one what the purpose of a movie star is: to make the audience care about characters and events they...

It might be premature to call director Doug Liman’s “Edge of Tomorrow” the best film of the summer. But, up to this point, this is the most fun I’ve had at the movies since “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and I thoroughly enjoyed the likes of “Godzilla,” “Neighbors,” and “Chef.” If nothing else, the alien invasion actioner is easy to go into with no baggage, because this is one of the few big blockbuster style sci-fi movies of the summer that isn’t part of a franchise, some kind of reboot, or focused on pre-existing superheroes. Though this is an adaptation, most of the general movie going public isn’t super familiar with Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel “All You Need is Kill” or the subsequent graphic novel. The fact that we’re talking about something different is refreshing, and when you consider that this also manages to be...

Yes, Tom Cruise, the all-American boy (for you budding archeologists, that’s a reference to the once-popular radio adventure series, Jack Armstrong, who boasted that misnomer. And for a fella’ past fifty, Cruise still has a boyish grin!). But this isn’t the high-flying Maverick from Top Gun or even the more down-to-Earth Jack Reacher. Why this character, John Cage, has never seen combat! But somehow he’s been gifted with an edge courtesy of those invading aliens and only one person can help him use that advantage: a hard-nosed special forces hero played by Emily Blunt! Has there been a better weekend for movies this year than this one? Friday offers more than enough for all tastes, temperaments and attention spans, from the saccharine ("The Fault in Our Stars") and acidic ("Borgman") to the crowd-pleasing ("Edge of Tomorrow") and deeply disturbing ("The Sacrament"). "Edge of Tomorrow" is not your ordinary Tom Cruise sci-fi mindbender. Doug Liman has a gift for off-center authenticity--even amid the orchestrated chaos of a major studio FX picture--and for finding moments on the fly that snap. His movies are hugely entertaining, often amusing, never predictable. In this case he is well-served by a brilliant script by Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth (Liman's "Fair Game" and "Jerusalem"), adapting Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel, which keeps us on the edge of surprise. And Cruise, 51, is perfectly cast as a Cage, a cocky Army flack who is a fish-out-of-water everyman sent to the front by General Brigham (Brendan.

Edge Of Tomorrow is, first of all, a great movie.
Somewhere in the credits it tells us that the script is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s mind-blowing novel All You Need Is Kill. I’m guessing the majority of film “critics” (dear gods, never let me be a film critic) are going in without having read the book at all—just with a bare knowledge of Tom Cruise and what they’re calling a “Sci-Fi Groundhog Day”.
I loved All You Need Is Kill. Its video-game-like determination to keep us rooting for the unknown mech-encased hero is alternatively hilarious and horribly violent, with raw metaphors and clever insights about humanity and war in general.

While the days summer reading assignments are long gone, the next three months has always been a perfect time to catch up on some great books. Edge of Tomorrow is one of the best, true action blockbusters we've had in some time. It's a film that sneakily places action and character on an even keel, using a "cause and effect" approach where the action helps define the characters rather than merely exists to blow something up or wow us with some new digital special effect. Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) has edited down a lean feature that manages to shift perspective even while operating within a storyline that must repeat itself time and again. What we've got here is an impressive balance of action and tongue-in-cheek humor, great chemistry between leads Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, perfect casting in Bill Paxton and a storyline that is hardly unique, but entirely satisfying. In short, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more-entertaining big budget actioner the rest of this year. Adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka's graphic novel...
