Tom Cruise and his "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman are in talks to re-team on the crime drama "Mena" at Universal Pictures and Cross Creek.
The fact-based tale follows Barry Seal, a 1980s pilot who was also a gun runner and trafficker that smuggled contraband for both the CIA and the Medellin cartel.
He ultimately was shot to death by the cartel in Baton Rouge. Cruise already has one qualification for the role as he's an accomplished pilot in his own right.
Gary Spinelli penned the drama which Doug Davison, Brian Grazer, Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson will produce. Filming aims to begin later this year.
Cruise isn't the only one planning a true story drug trade tale. Legendary Pictures is planning a film adaptation of a 2011 Rolling Stone article which would be a starring vehicle for "Sons of Anarchy" and "Pacific Rim" actor Charlie Hunnam.

The Forbes 30 Under 30 Hollywood edition has arrived, and the site has honored some of the most game-changing young actors in Hollywood. People like Aziz Ansari, Lena Dunham, Chris Colfer and Maude Apatow (Judd Apatow's eldest daughter) all made the cut, and for good reason.
Other recognizable names on the list are Chloe Moretz, Logan Lerman, Rebel Wilson, Nicholas Hoult, Greta Gerwig, Sam Claflin, "Crazy, Stupid, Love's" Analeigh Tipton, "Catfish" director Nev Schulman and "Chronicle" scribe Max Landis, but many of the people honored are ones who spend most of their time behind the camera. "Saturday Night Live" writer/actor Kate McKinnon and writer Simon Rich both made the list, while "Adventure Time" producer/writer Rebecca Sugar was recognized as well.
Then there are producers like David and Megan Ellison (who we're likely to get a lot more familiar with in the coming years), Oliver Bogner, Tyler Thompson and Alex Hirsch,...
