Fred Roos, the casting director turned producer who jump-started the career of Jack Nicholson and collaborated often with Francis Ford Coppola, sharing a best picture Oscar with the filmmaker for The Godfather Part II, has died. He was 89.
Roos died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills, a publicist announced.
It’s part of Hollywood lore that before Harrison Ford became a famous actor, he was laboring as a carpenter to make ends meet. What some might not know is that it was at Roos’ house where Ford was woodworking when the casting director befriended him, eventually pushing him for roles in George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973) and Star Wars (1977) and Coppola’s The Conversation (1974).
And it was Roos who convinced Lucas — who had been leaning toward Amy Irving — that Carrie Fisher should portray Princess Leia in Star Wars. (Roos did not have an official role on that film.)

Actor Orlando Bloom was asked to play a small role in the 2013 film The Bling Ring. But Bloom didn’t feel comfortable participating in a movie that was based on the real-life crime.
Why Sofia Coppola made ‘The Bling Ring’ Orlando Bloom | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
The Bling Ring was directed by filmmaker Sofia Coppola. It featured actors like Emma Watson and Katie Chang playing the teenagers who targeted celebrity homes for a string of robberies between 2008 and 2009. Coppola decided to direct a film based on these real-life events out of fascination for the crimes. Especially since the perpetrators were teenagers.
“When I read the story and learned that they were teenagers I did think about how different it was when I was growing up. We didn’t have reality TV or all those websites or the internet. And just the whole idea that anybody could be famous, and everybody is famous.

Perhaps AMC should stand for Another Maddening Cancellation. As AMC Networks’ canceling spree continues, the company has nixed the animated AMC+ series Pantheon after one season, even though it had ordered two seasons and the second season had already been produced. In another blow to fans, the first season of Pantheon has been removed from the AMC+ library, according to Deadline, which first reported the cancellation news. Created by Craig Silverstein and based on short stories by award-winning author Ken Liu, Pantheon“explore[d] the theme of technology through the lens of family, focusing on both the people whose brains have been digitally uploaded and the loved ones they’ve left behind,” AMC Networks said in an August 2022 press release. “Maddie [Katie Chang], a bullied teen, receives help from someone online. Exclusive: Animated drama series Pantheon, which stars the voices of Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Dano and Taylor Schilling, is the latest series to be scrapped at AMC Networks.
The series has been canceled after one season, despite a two-season order, and pulled from AMC’s streaming service as part of the company’s cost-cutting drive. The second season, which had been produced, will not air.
Pantheon joins shows such as Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and the second seasons of 61st Street and Moonhaven, which were all axed as part of a one-time tax write-down at the end of last year.
This write-down features around 400M of content and was revealed in an SEC filing in December.
“As a result of the Plan, the programming assessments pertain to a broad mix of owned and licensed content, including legacy television series and films that will no longer be in active rotation...

Netflix’s three-part documentary series The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist explores the true story behind the so-called Bling Ring. The new trailer shows the targets of the burglary crew and delves into the background of the thieves who wanted to be just as famous as the Hollywood stars they stole from. The fact they not only pulled off these robberies but then became celebrities is beyond ridiculous and can only happen in La La Land.
The docuseries was directed by Miles Blayden-Ryall and executive produced by Lawrence Walford, Rob Davis, and Alastair Cook.
The Real Bling Ring premieres on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.

Pantheon is one of the most unique TV series in recent memory.
The series got off the ground earlier this month and has amassed a 100 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
With many different streaming offerings, it's difficult for many shows to break through.
Since its inception, AMC+ has prided itself in experimenting with different types of content, and Pantheon is the latest example of that.
The animated drama series picks up with a young woman receiving messages from an unknown number that claims to be her deceased father.
Trying to uncover the truth, she stumbles upon a larger conspiracy involving the singularity.
The voice cast is perfect, with names such as Daniel Dae Kim, Maude Apatow, Taylor Schilling, Scoot McNairy, and Aaron Eckhart.
TV Fanatic caught up with Dae Kim ahead of the series premiere, and he was attracted to the show because there was nothing else on TV quite like it.

AMC+’s Pantheon posits a near future in which not one but two different companies have cracked the code to “uploaded intelligence” (Ui) — distinct from AI in that these aren’t sentient consciousnesses born of computers but ones born as humans, and then digitized into the cloud at the end of their corporeal lives. The approaches taken by Logorhythms and Alliance differ in minor points but, strikingly, both have chosen to deploy this bleeding-edge science in the same way: by stripping the UIs of everything but their professional skills so that they can continue toiling without end in the afterlife, trapped in simulated offices with little memory of any existence beyond work.

For any adult still avoiding animation out of some stubborn refusal to understand its advantages as a both visual and storytelling medium, “Pantheon” makes its ambitions known from the get-go. After the eerie opening theme, scoring a fluorescent string of code smashing through a Greek statue, the show cuts to a high-school classroom, where a blunt voiceover lays the stakes bare. “Most of the girls in my class completely missed the moment when the world began to end,” teen outcast Maddie Kim (Katie Chang) tells us, the laptops blinking in unison as if in agreement. It’s a fittingly arresting start to this unnerving series, which taps an all-star cast to meld micro character work with macro questions about technology that may never have a satisfying answer.
Created by Dan Silverstein, and based on Ken Liu’s short stories, “Pantheon” layers conspiracies on top of the even more bitter truth at every turn.

The end of August and the start of September is a pretty light week in terms of TV premieres — but the highest-profile one is really high profile: Prime Video’s mega-budgeted Lord of the Rings series. The Aug. 31-Sept. 6 period also features the return of Rick and Morty and the beginning of the end for Queen Sugar.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter‘s rundown of premieres, returns and specials over the next seven days. It would be next to impossible to watch everything, but let THR point the way to worthy options for the coming week. All times are Et/Pt unless noted.

The sight of Paris Hilton's jewelry covering the surface of a plain, wooden kitchen table was staggering. Diamond bracelets. Bangles. Expensive watches. Cocktail rings. Pearls. This was just some of the stuff the LAPD had recovered when they raided the homes of the teens and 20-somethings we'd later come to know as the Bling Ring. It was 2009, and I was a 25-year-old correspondent for a cable TV network, crouched on the ground in front of police headquarters, scribbling notes as Detective Brett Goodkin shared pictures and descriptions of the loot with me and the three or four dozen other journalists assembled.
It wasn't surprising to me when, fewer than five years later, I found myself watching the story unfold again on the big screen in Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring." The fascination was already at a fever pitch in the fall of 2009. The group was eventually linked to...

Birds are fascinating creatures. This is true, but most people take birds for granted, so many of them flying about overhead. Birds are everywhere, and as creepy as that thought may be to some, they are always watching over us, constant spectators of the human experience below. Her on planet Earth, we go though life struggling primarily to answer two questions… who am i and what should I do with this life i have?
It’s no wonder there are some drawn in by a fascination for these feathered friends of ours. Those who watch, track and seek out birds of all species are generally referred to as “birders.” The term’s definition may be argued by some, including those in the film A Birder’S Guide To Everything. Directed and co-written by Rob Meyer, this film is a coming of age story about an awkward 15-year old boy named David Portnoy.

Bird is the Word: Meyer’s Debut a Well Meaning But Slight Observation
Bird watching seems to be something of a recent cinematic inspiration, though has yet to show much potential in the narrative realm thus far, with David Frankel’s 2011 comedic misfire The Big Year now joined by Rob Meyer’s directorial debut, A Birder’s Guide to Everything. Grappling with loss, strained familial relationships, and coming of age essence, various dilemmas congeal into a mostly light-hearted effort that seems to feel genuinely about its cluster of characters, even though, beyond the crux of its protagonists’ snazzy and oft unexplored hobby, Meyer and his cast can never mold the narrative into anything more than a standard affair. A few acute observations aside, it’s a slight film that feels most effective when utilizing the heavy hitters in its supporting cast.

While Hollywood likes to show teenagers in movies getting up to no good, co-writer/director Rob Meyer has a different story to tell with the coming-of-age comedy "A Birder's Guide To Everything," where the only thing these kids wield is a pair of binoculars. Co-written by Oscar winner Luke Matheny (for his Live Action Short "God Of Love"), and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, James Le Gros, Alex Wolff, Katie Chang, and Ben Kingsley, the story follows David, a 15-year-old birding fanatic, who has snapped a photo of a supposedly extinct duck that hasn't been seen in North America since 1878. The problem is, the picture is too blurry to be properly identified, so on the advice of Dr. Konrad, a legendary ornithologist, he assembles a ragtag team to try and get a better photo, in a tale that's more than just about birds. And in this exclusive clip, we see the first meeting between David and Dr.

At only 17, Kodi Smit-McPhee is probably best known for starring in somewhat macabre projects — from Let Me In to The Road, his precocious darkness and intense gaze seem to always be on display. Even ParaNorman’s Norman Babcock was a bit of an outcast. Even though A Birder’s Guide to Everything isn’t exactly devoid of difficult emotional truths (and Ok, Ok, a gawky high school kid obsessed with birding might still fit into “charmingly misunderstood outcast” territory), Smit-McPhee was thrilled to finally get to work with actors his own age.
