The British prime minister and leader of the U.K. Conservative Party, Rishi Sunak, has officially called a general election in what is set to be a historical year for global politics.
Britons will take to the polls on Thursday, July 4 after ministers had been assured a summer election will not take place. But off the back of good economic news for Sunak’s government as they hit a tricky inflation target, senior politicians frantically changed schedules to capitalize on the welcomed development.
“I have never been prouder to be British,” Sunak began in his statement outside London’s Downing Street on Wednesday afternoon. “I recognize that it has not always been easy. Some of you will only just be feeling the benefits (of inflation coming down)… Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future. Earlier today, I spoke to His Majesty the King to request a dissolution of Parliament.

British voters will head to the polls on American Independence Day.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has just announced on the steps of his Downing Street home in the pouring rain that the date of the next general election will be July 4.
Rumors had been rife since this morning’s nationwide inflation statistics, which brought good news for the sitting Conservative government, that an election would be imminent, although commentators didn’t expect it to be so soon until the past hour or so. Most analysts had previously believed the election would take place later this year or in January 2025, which was the absolute latest it had to happen.
Sunak’s Conservatives have been trailing in the polls to the opposition Labour Party for months now and Labour will be favorites following a recent disastrous local election campaign for the Tories.

While attending his first state opening of Parliament, King Charles III announced British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak‘s plan to ban smoking in the United Kingdom, albeit through a step-by-step process.
The legislation would increase the legal smoking age by one year every year from now on. British citizens born after January 1, 2009 – 14 years old or younger – would not be allowed to purchase cigarettes or any other tobacco products for the rest of their lives.
“My Government will introduce legislation to create a smoke-free generation by restricting the sale of tobacco so that children currently aged fourteen or younger can never be sold cigarettes, and restricting the sale and marketing of e-cigarettes to children,” Charles declared during his speech to parliament.
The prime minister first presented ideas to cease the selling of tobacco products, such as single-use vapes, to the forthcoming generation during the 2023 Conservative Party conference in Manchester.

The Daleks have appeared in every series of Doctor Who since it returned in 2005, after being in 14 stories in the show’s original run. It’s understandable: without the success of the Daleks in 1963 it’s unlikely Doctor Who would be on TV today. The two are so intertwined that when people think of the Doctor, they can’t help but think of the Daleks. Being so closely connected in such a long-running show though, has its drawbacks: the Daleks always return, but their credibility as a threat has diminished.
Former showrunner Steven Moffat described the Daleks as “the most reliably defeated enemies in the universe”. Moffat (and Mark Gatiss) therefore gave them a victory, and then rested them, relatively speaking, with cameo appearances in series six and ten. Under Moffat’s predecessor Russell T. Davies, the villains reached their logical conclusion of trying to destroy everything in the universe that wasn’t Dalek.

British historian David Starkey made an appearance on a pre-Coronation broadcast on Gb News Thursday, where he claimed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was not sufficiently “grounded” in British culture.
The disgraced historian made the claim after host Andrew Pierce appeared to suggest that Coronation efforts from the British government have been muted.
“The prime minister now has been, in my mind, detached or at least semi-detached, from this Coronation,” Pierce said.
In response, Starkey said: “I think one of the reasons that I think a lot has gone wrong, for example, why parliament has not been properly represented at the coronation of a parliamentary monarchy, is because the government isn’t interested in the constitution.”
Starkey continued to say that what he was claiming was a “difficult and controversial” topic, but he believes it is true, after adding: “The prime minister, the man of immense power, of extraordinary skill, but really,...

Florence Pugh revealed the dark depths she went to in order to play a traumatised psychology student in Ari Aster’s 2019 horror, Midsommar.
The A24 film follows Pugh’s character Dani on a trip to Sweden to attend a midsummer festival with her increasingly distant boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) and his friends.
At the end of the movie, Dani is crowned the May Queen and chooses to sacrifice Christian after a slew of disturbing events.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Off Menu podcast hosted by comedians James Acaster and Ed Gamble, Pugh said she struggled to shake the character off and even felt guilty for leaving her behind.
“When I did it, I was so wrapped up in her,” Pugh said. “I’d never played someone that was in that much pain before and I would put myself in really s*** situations that maybe other actors don’t...

Lewis Capaldi opens up about suffering from bodily twitches while performing live in his new Netflix documentary.
In 2022, the Scottish singer-songwriter was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, a condition that affects the nerves and causes repetitive movements or unwanted sounds.
Before he received the diagnosis, he had experienced shoulder twitches that he said eventually “became out of control”.
“I didn’t know what it was at the time,” Capaldi disclosed in the new film, Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now.
“I’ve since learned that I have Tourette’s,” the Grammy-nominated pop star told the camera a week after his diagnosis. “Oh right, that makes complete sense now, when I look back.”
“Know how many people I’ve told I have Tourette’s since?” he asked. “It’s outrageous. People think I’m bragging. But it’s good to be like, ‘I’ve got this thing by the way, this...

The 2010 action romance cult classic starred Michael Cera as the titular Scott Pilgrim, bass guitarist for a garage-rock band who never had issues getting a girlfriend.
That is until he meets Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), whose army of ex-boyfriends will stop at nothing to eliminate him from her list of suitors.
Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Kieran Culkin, Brie Larson, and Chris Evans also starred, all of whom Wright has said will reunite for the new anime adaptation.
“This is not a drill! This is happening!” the Scott Pilgrim director tweeted on Thursday (30 March).
“After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, I’m thrilled to say one is Imminent, with the whole cast back together and… you are going to lose your minds.

Taron Egerton has expressed his strong disdain for wearing fake moustaches, going so far as to compare the “horrendous” experience to childbirth.
The 33-year-old Welsh actor stars as real-life videogame designer Henk Rogers in Apple TV Plus’ new movie Tetris – released on Friday (31 March) – which tells the story of how the Russian video game made its way to the West.
To accurately portray a young Rogers, Egerton was made to wear a fake moustache throughout the film.
“It’s absolutely horrendous, I will never do it ever again, it doesn’t matter how much you pay me. Don’t let me wear a fake moustache ever again,” the Kingsman: The Secret Service actor pleaded during an appearance on Good Morning Britain’s Thursday (30 March) episode.
Recalling that he had sported one years ago in 2016’s sports drama Eddie the Eagle, Egerton explained: “I wore that for part of the movie,...

Joe Lycett has opened up about his penchant for high-profile PR stunts, explaining that he feels “pressure” from his mental health to stop doing them.
In recent years, the comedian has built a reputation for orchestrating news-worthy stunts.
The most notorious of these was his ultimatum to David Beckham last year in which he threatened to shred £10,000 in cash unless the ex-footballer renounced his World Cup ambassador contract with Qatar over the country’s LGBT+ human rights abuses.
After Beckham neglected to respond, Lycett posted a video of himself shredding what appeared to be the cash – only to later reveal that he had in fact donated the money to LGBT+ charities.
Speaking to Radio Times in a new interview, Lycett said: “It’s much easier for me, actually, if I’m not trending and I’m not in the paper because I live a much happier, quieter life. And so if anything,...

BBC Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has landed himself and the corporation in hot water once again, this time on the government’s controversial asylum policy.
The Home Secretary said this morning she is “obviously disappointed” and the BBC is understood to have spoken to Lineker and reminded him of his responsibilities after he described yesterday’s policy for handling Britain’s small boats crisis as “beyond awful.” He went on to equate the language used to sell the policy with “that used by Germany in the 1930s.”
Speaking to the BBC’s Today in the past hour, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said she is “obviously disappointed” by Lineker’s comments. “I don’t think [comparing the policy to Nazi Germany] is an appropriate way of framing the debate,” she added.

The Scottish Doctor Who star also took aim at the Conservative government, describing the UK’s ruling party as “f***wits”.
Partway through Friday’s (3 February) episode of the Channel 4 comedy series, Tennant was asked whether he supported the strikes that have been carried out across various industries, including rail and NHS workers.
“Of course,” Tennant responded. “It’s just the sense that... after everything that’s gone on, through the pandemic, that nurses are having to go on strike to be paid what they’re worth... It makes you want to spit, doesn’t it?”
He then went on to criticise the Tory government’s handling of the strikes, with discussion turning to Rishi Sunak’s 100-days-in-office milestone.

Politicians have been diversifying their tactics in attempts to engage new audiences in recent years.
This has resulted in the use of music alongside campaigns, speeches and social media videos. Many try to choose a track that makes them relatable, or worse, cool.
As you can imagine, when an artist disagrees with the politics of the person who has used their music, things can get a little ugly.
Below we list five times artists have rejected politicians using their music:

The politician, who represents Georgia, has a controversial history of sharing extremist views and Dr. Dre was not impressed at being associated with her.

The great attraction of The Apprentice – charm is too strong a term for it – is the always vast gap between the Bezos/Musk/Gates level-aspirations of the competitors and their dismally limited abilities. The unspoken foundational irony of The Apprentice has always been that if any of these characters had any real entrepreneurial instinct, they’d be doing the equivalent of what the young Alan Sugar was doing when he started out in the 1960s, and selling car aerials up and down the Charing Cross Road. They’d be too busy slaving away on their new website, chasing orders and “encouraging” their staff to work harder, to muck around with some superannuated reality TV show.
Which is my way of welcoming series 17 of the Alan Sugar show. And the contestants don’t let us down. The show’s producers seem to be engaged in battle against the law of diminishing returns.

Comedian Joe Lycett has spoken out about his recent stunt targeting David Beckham over his promotion of Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.
Lycett condemned Beckham for his lucrative deal with Qatar, threatening to shred £10,000 in cash if the former England footballer didn’t renounce his support of the country over its stance on gay rights. (It is illegal to be gay in Qatar.)
After Beckham, whom Lycett described as a “gay icon”, failed to respond, Lycett appeared to shred the money in a video shared to social media. However, he later revealed that he had in fact only pretended to shred money, and had donated £10,000 instead to LGBT+ charaties.
During an appearance on Lorraine on Friday morning (9 December), Lycett reflected on the stunt.

Joe Lycett has ruled himself out of replacing Matt Lucas on the next series of The Great British Bake Off.
The comedian had been a popular choice among viewers of the hit Channel 4 baking series, after Lucas announced his departure earlier this week.
Some bookmakers even listed Lycett as the favourite to take up the vacant role alongside Noel Fielding.
During an interview with The News Agents podcast, however, Lycett shut down speculation that a Bake Off role could be on the cards.
“No, thank you,” he said. “I’m taking myself out the race.”
On the same podcast, Lycett addressed his sarcastic appearance on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg back in September.
According to Lycett, his mocking manner during the interview, which saw him claim to be “extremely right wing” and effusively praise Liz Truss, stemmed from his very real anger over the government’s “consistent lying” over the Partygate scandal.

Seth Rogen has admitted he was “incredibly intimidated” by the idea of working with Charlize Theron.
The actor, 40, made the comments while speaking at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Breakfast.
As he took to the stage to present the Sherry Lansing Leadership award to Theron, who he starred with in the 2019 comedy Long Shot, he said: “[I was] incredibly intimidated to work with her, not just because of how talented she is.
“I was literally physically intimidated to be around her, because she murders people in every movie she does.”
He also joked that even though their “movie bombed”, they still “stayed friends”.
“I’m so glad we get to keep hanging out because Charlize is fun. She is a fun person to hang out with, maybe too fun at times,” Rogen added.

Seth Rogen made fun of Kim Kardashian for missing The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Breakfast, where she was scheduled to be a presenter.
At the star-studded gala this week, the 40-year-old comedian took the stage to present the Sherry Lansing Leadership award to Charlize Theron. During his speech, he briefly roasted Kardashian after she skipped out on the awards ceremony.
“Are we going to talk about how Kim Kardashian didn’t show up? Is that going to happen?” he told the audience, via Page Six.
Rogen then joked about how the reality star didn’t have a valid reason for missing out on the event.
“I have seen every episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, I know she is not doing something more important than this,” he said. “I’ve seen 100,000 hours of her.”
The Freaks and Geeks star continued with the roast, explaining: “She’s never...

Google has released its annual Year in Search statistics for 2022, revealing Johnny Depp as the No 1 top trending person people searched for.
The actor was, of course, this year embroiled in a highly-publicised defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Google’s ranking is based on the search terms that had the “highest spike this year” rather than the overall number of times searched. In the US, Depp was followed by Will Smith, who also created a media storm when he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in March.
The third top-trending person was Aquaman star Heard, thanks again to the court trial with her ex-husband.
In the UK statistics, Depp was surpassed by embattled footballer Mason Greenwood, who was the top trend this year.
The 21-year-old Manchester United forward appeared in court last month charged with attempted rape after allegations against him were brought forward in January.

Topping the list of search trends was the viral puzzle game Wordle, which had social media users sharing their little green squares. The game was soon bought by The New York Times. A very Canadian take on the game, Canuckle, also made the list.
Following behind that was Ukraine, which was invaded earlier in the year by Russian forces and continues to be embroiled in a war.
The World Cup, one of the biggest sporting events in the world, also made It on the list at no. 3.

Strictly Come Dancing star Rose Ayling-Ellis has revealed who she thinks will win the 2022 series.
The EastEnders actor is the reigning Strictly champ, having won the Glitterball Trophy in 2021 with partner Giovanni Pernice.
Ayling-Ellis, who is deaf, wowed the judges and audiences throughout the competition, but was best known for her Couple’s Choice routine to “Symphony” by Clean Bandit.
During the performance, the pair danced a stretch of the routine in total silence, to recreate Ayling-Ellis’s experience of dancing without being able to hear the music for the audience.
Appearing on This Morning on Wednesday (16 November), Ayling-Ellis recalled her experience on the show and admitted that she “can’t believe it’s been one year”.
“Everyone still remembers it, everyone still knows that dance,” the 27-year-old said.
“It does send out a powerful message, but I want to carry on with the work. That’s what’s most important to manage.

The UK has officially fallen into a recession, which will push more than 500,000 people into unemployment, according to a new forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility (Obr).
The (Obr), the government’s forecaster, said there will be the biggest fall in living standards in the UK since records began with inflation “tipping the economy into a recession lasting just over a year.”
The forecaster said that it expects household incomes, once adjusted for inflation, to fall back to 2013 levels and will take at least six years to recover.
The UK has been suffering economically due to Brexit, the fallout from the pandemic, an ongoing energy crisis exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine and the disastrous fiscal policies of the previous Conservative government.
UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt, in his inaugural Autumn Statement, today set out a string of tax increases and a tighter public spending plan that he said would generate a combined £55bn.

Bruce Springsteen has finally settled a debate spanning near-50 years about the lyrics to his song “Thunder Road”.
The words to the song have been a source of frustration for fans after the lyrics appear to have different lyrics across Springsteen’s memorabilia.
Last year, the debate started up again on social media after two handwritten copies of lyrics were sold with different words.
On some sources, the opening lyric reads: “The screen door slams, Mary’s dress sways”
Elsewhere, it says: “The screen door slams, Mary’s dress waves”
Now Springsteen has finally settled the debate. Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday (15 November) the singer brought an original copy of his 1975 record to explain the confusion.
“This record is almost 50 years old,” Springsteen said, before Fallon got on his knees to beg him to put fans out of their misery.
