Jodie Foster is one of the most talented and respected actresses in Hollywood. From working on many critically acclaimed projects to being nominated for an Oscar five times and winning two out of them, she has certainly seen the heights of success in her career. Naturally, she has worked very hard for these achievements.
Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs
Her most recent work, Nyad, is the perfect example of her dedication as an actress. Not only was she nominated for an Oscar for her work in the sports-thriller film, but she also pushed her physical capabilities as much as she could.
Suggested“I didn’t want that life”: Jodie Foster Vowed To Never Commit The Same Mistake That Destroyed Madonna
It would seem that the 61-year-old actress had a point to prove when making the movie and would stop at nothing to make it.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph (‘The Holdovers’) becomes 10th Black woman to win Best Supporting Actress Oscar
Just as Gold Derby predicted, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) has prevailed at the 2024 Oscars in the category of Best Supporting Actress. Earlier this awards season, the 37-year-old performer claimed victory at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards for her role as bereaved cafeteria worker Mary Lamb in Alexander Payne‘s comedy-drama film. This marks Randolph’s first career Oscars win on her first-ever nomination.
Randolph was the overwhelming favorite to triumph on Sunday, March 10 by all 29 of Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts from major media outlets: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Claudia Puig (Kpcc), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Erik Davis (Fandango), Grae Drake (Moviefone), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Kevin Polowy (Cbr), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood...

Annette Bening still likes to swim, despite the brutal eight hours a day she spent in the water for her Netflix film Nyad. Bening stars as Diana Nyad, who, at 64, became the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Bening trained for a year to perfect her stroke, and got to know Nyad herself, with Jodie Foster alongside her, starring as Nyad’s real-life friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll. “I swim all the time, it’s become part of my staying sane,” Bening says now, adding that she learned from Nyad that pushing oneself beyond what you thought you could do is “a way to know yourself, and that’s a way to expand your own idea about yourself in the world, and also increase your joy, and increase your appreciation.” Here, Bening looks back over some favorite moments in her career, from The Grifters,...

Annette Bening and her “Nyad” co-star Jodie Foster share similar tastes – Bening Foster over with a dog and Christmas decorations. And they once were wore similar gowns to the Oscars.
Considering they are two of the greatest actresses working today, one might assume Bening and Foster were friends – or knew each other – prior to working together on the Netflix film. The two are both Oscar nominated for portraying swimmer Diana Nyad (Bening) and her best friend/coach Bonnie Stoll (Foster.) In a Q&a at the Aero Theatre for the American Cinematheque, the pair revealed they had only met in passing and Bening was a bit intimidated when she heard Foster was being offered the part of Stoll. You can view the Q&a below.
Said Bening, “I thought, “Oh, she’ll never do it. Because she’s selective, and she’s got class, and she doesn’t know me.

Jodie Foster has been in the public eye since she was in preschool. From childhood, she understood the weight placed on her as the youngest member of her family and the sole breadwinner; as an adult, she is still coming to terms with who she is as a person. “Vulnerability… my least favorite word! ‘Vulnerability’ is code for ‘women,'” she told The Atlantic in an interview published Sunday.
“And it’s code for what you’re supposed to bring to screen that’s nice and girly, that everybody wants you to be,” she continued.
She responded to reviews that have slammed her for an alleged lack of vulnerability. “Yeah, I know what that means.” For her, it means showing vulnerability that “just doesn’t look the way you’re used to seeing it.”
Foster told the outlet that for most of her career, she has intentionally guarded her private life.

Embarking on the pursuit of goals is a timeless and universal endeavor that transcends age limitations. While some may argue that age hinders the realization of dreams, it is crucial to dispel this misconception and recognize that age should not impede our aspirations. Nyad is a sports drama that illustrates the steadfast resoluteness of a resilient woman in her sixties, determined to resurrect a previous, thwarted aspiration—the continuous swim from Cuba to Florida. Directed by the dynamic documentary filmmaking duo, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, renowned for their Academy and BAFTA-winning documentary Free Solo (2018), which chronicles Alex Honnold’s daring free solo climb in 2017 on El Capitan, a towering 3,000-foot-high rock formation in Yosemite Valley, California. In their debut feature film, they draw significant inspiration from their protagonist’s almost irrationally optimistic outlook and relentless drive. The narrative unfolds as a poignant exploration of the protagonist’s obstinate...

As Spinal Tap’s David St Hubbins famously noted, there is a fine line between stupid and clever. Likewise, one might say, there is a fine line between hero and villain. Diana Nyad – author, radio host, squash player and, most famously, long distance swimmer – encompasses aspects of each of these things in Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi’s take on the most remarkable swim of her life. The film does not concern itself with the way that aspects of that swim have been called into question, nor with Nyad’s established tendency to exaggerate, but focuses instead on her experience of forcing her way through life whilst demanding much more from it than others do, and on others’ experience of the attraction and sometime unpleasantness of being close to such a person.
The closest person of all to her is Bonnie Stoll, her lifelong best friend and latterly her coach.

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Supporting Actress at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their first round of predictions, and they say the race is Da’Vine Joy Randolph‘s to lose for “The Holdovers.” The other four Oscar nominees are Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”) and Jodie Foster (“Nyad”).
As of this writing, a leading 18 out of our 20 Oscar Experts are predicting a victory for Randolph: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby...

In terms of how many biographical performances they each include, the 2023 and 2024 acting Oscar lineups are staggeringly different. Whereas only two portrayals of real people (Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in “Elvis” and Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”) were recognized last year, a whopping 10 are presently nominated, constituting the highest such rate (50%) in five years. What’s more, this is only the third time in almost a century of Oscars history that real-life characters aren’t outnumbered by fictional ones.
This year’s near-record biographical performance rate ranks only behind the 60% ones of 2016 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, three of the four eventual winners in both previous cases belonged to those majorities. This includes leads Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and Olivia Colman as Queen Anne as well as supporting players Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley.

Have you ever left something unfinished? At the age of 60, Diana Nyad felt that she had — 32 years prior, she’d begun an attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida, a 110-mile marathon. Due to strong winds, Nyad was forced to abandon her attempt. That wasn’t the end of the story, however; in 2010, Nyad began to train for the swim once more. The epic story of that swim is told in the new film Nyad, starring four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening as Diana Nyad and Oscar winner Jodie Foster as her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll. You can watch a conversation between the actors and the real people they portray above.

Like clockwork, every January brings a cavalcade of Oscar nominee snubs and surprises, but Academy voting trends typically don't stop there. Sometimes predictable, usually disappointing, and -- every so often -- downright confounding, there's always one nomination wrinkle that everyone's favorite awards show throws into the mix. Let's call it, "Movie that most normies have never even heard of." We use "normie" affectionately, of course, referring to general audiences with nine-to-five jobs who don't spend every waking moment on the internet.
So after today's high-profile Oscars announcement, what stands out as the 2024 version of this annual and bizarrely fascinating event?
Folks, allow me to introduce you to a little movie called "Nyad," a biopic directed by the husband-and-wife directing duo of Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin ("Free Solo") and based on the memoir written by long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad. Updated with full list, more details: The nominations for the 96th Oscars unveiled Tuesday has focused the race around a real Best Picture competition between Universal’s Oppenheimer (13 nominations), Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon (10 noms), Searchlight’s Poor Things (11 noms) and Warner Bros’ Barbie (eight noms).
That means an impressive 21 nominations for Barbenheimer, the one-two summer punch that had a collective gross of almost $2.4 billion at the global box office, and did as much to restore moviegoing as Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick did the previous year as the business struggled to rebound from the pandemic. Oppenheimer and Barbie got to fully promote their films right before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that hindered many of the other films that bowed in the fall because guild members were forbidden from stumping for their films.

Annette Bening is an actor’s actor. Like many of the greats before her, she began her career in the theatre. Through the 80s, she quietly compiled a library of rich, complex characters before making her Tony-nominated broadway debut in 1987’s “Coastal Disturbances.”
Bening then made her well deserved transition over to Hollywood with John Hughes’ “The Great Outdoors.” The film didn’t perform as well as hoped, nor did Milos Forman’s “Valmont” which was released the following year, but they both paved the way for Bening’s eventual Oscar-nominated breakout as Myra Langtry in Stephen Frears’ “The Grifters.”
She got particularly close to Oscar gold with “American Beauty” in 2000. Annette bagged the BAFTA and SAG award for her iconic portrayal of the colourfully volatile wife-in-crisis, Carolyn Burnham. She lost to Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) though, who had edged her out at the Globes.

Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) is being underestimated this awards season. The two-time Oscar and Golden Globes champ for “Silence of the Lambs” and “The Accused” has had renaissance, of late. She opted to take on less acting work through the 2010s as she switched her focus to directing. She reaped an Emmy bid for helming an episode of “Orange Is The New Black” and directed installments of “House of Cards” and “Black Mirror.” Two years ago, she delivered a powerhouse performance in “The Mauritanian” and won another Golden Globe for her portrayal of Nancy Hollander.
She is back in contention at the Globes tonight for her work in the Netflix biopic “Nyad.” As the stalwart Bonnie Stoll, she is the heart of the picture, which chronicles the attempts by Diana Nyad to swim from Cuba to Key West. Annette Bening portrays the marathon swimmer while Foster is her best friend and coach.

Glenn Close delivered a killer Golden Globes acceptance speech in 2019 when she pulled off an upset in Best Drama Actress by winning for “The Wife.” Lady Gaga was the frontrunner for her performance in “A Star is Born” but it was Close who took to the stage.
We could be in for a similar situation this year as Annette Bening looks to claim a career win of her own. The frontrunner for Best Drama Actress is Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Also nominated are Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), and Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla”). Bening’s path to a Golden Globe victory isn’t just merited by her veteran status, however. She also has the backing of the critics.
Richard Lawson (Vanity Fair) opined: “Nyad is played by Annette Bening, who trained for a year to ready herself for the physical demands of the role.

If there’s one takeaway from the LGBTQ narrative films that came into the world and across our screens this year, it’s the sheer variety of the stories there are to tell.
From real-world historical biopics and inspirational sports dramas, to tender love stories and raunchy comedies, there really was something for everyone this year. Captivating characters, fearless performances and narrative tapestries that defy convention and troublesome tropes all reigned supreme. As such, here are some of the best we got.

Jodie Foster is fast becoming a sure thing for a Best Supporting Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars and her status as Golden Globe favorite for “Nyad” only boosts that theory.
Foster c0-stars in this Netflix biopic which charts Diana Nyad’s attempts to swim across the 110-mile open ocean from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening takes on the titular role while Foster features as Nyad’s coach and friend, Bonnie Stoll. Foster arguably has the meatier role out of the two as the entire climax of the film features Bening’s Nyad swimming, largely without dialogue. That leaves Foster’s Stoll as the narrative anchor and the actress delivers a supporting turn that feels like a co-lead (this is something Oscar voters love in this category but we’ll get back to that later). Critics love Foster’s performance, too.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Nyad, Julia Cox’s adaptation of Diana Nyad’s memoir that was the diving-off point for directors Elizabeth Chai Vásárhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s Netflix movie.
The plot follows the true story of Nyad’s attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida at age 63. Annette Bening plays Nyad, and Jodie Foster her coach Bonnie Stoll. Both recently snagged Golden Globe nominations for their performances.
Nyad attempted the Cuba-Florida swim once at the peak of her long-distance swimming career in 1978, but did not make it. Following her retirement, she covered sports for ABC and NPR among other outlets, but after turning 60 in 2010 she attempted the swim again. She didn’t make it that time, either.

This year’s Golden Globe nominees for Best Film Supporting Actress are Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), Julianne Moore (“May December”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Two of them in particular, Foster and Moore, happen to have something in common. It’s not just the fact that they’re both previous Oscar winners contending for Netflix releases this year. It’s actually the fact that they’ve both taken on the role of Clarice Starling in separate films adapted from novelist Thomas Harris‘s Hannibal Lecter series.
In 1991’s “The Silence of the Lambs” directed by Jonathan Demme, Foster played Clarice, who was assigned by the FBI to interview and profile deranged killer Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). The film was a huge critical and commercial hit upon release that February, so much so that 13 months later it won five Academy Awards including Best Picture.

“I remember hearing about the swim at the time that she achieved it, but I didn’t follow her,” says “Nyad” star Annette Bening, who plays the titular role of Diana Nyad in the Netflix movie. Although the four-time Oscar nominee wasn’t familiar with the athlete’s previous achievements, she does say, “I used to listen to her on NPR. She used to be on NPR regularly, and I remember her voice and I remember the timbre of it, and just her intelligence. She would weigh in on controversial, ethical issues in athletics. I remember that, but I didn’t really know a lot about her.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Gold Derby above.
Bening was instantly drawn to the script penned by Nyad and Julia Cox. “I immediately wanted to do it,” she says. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, this story is great!’ I was moved by it and moved by her.

Annette Bening is fantastic as the real-life Diana Nyad in Netflix’s “Nyad.” The film documents her effort to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage at the tender age of 60! She never gave up. But she couldn’t do it all without the help of Jodie Foster’s Bonnie Stoll, her ex-lover who

A lucky 13 performers have won both Oscars for acting. That is one hell of an exclusive club that even the likes of four-time Best Actress champion Katharine Hepburn and triple Best Actor victor Daniel Day-Lewis didn’t manage to join. Here’s the breakdown of thespians who taken home both lead and supporting Academy Awards in order of their achievement:
Helen Hayes won Best Actress in 1932 for “The Sin of Madelon Claudet.” She won Best Supporting Actress in 1971 for “Airport.” Hayes, who was the first performer to pull off this double feature, had the longest time between wins.
Jack Lemmon won for his supporting turn in “Mister Roberts” in 1956 before he took home Best Actor in 1974 for “Save the Tiger.”
Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress in 1945 for “Gaslight” and again in 1957 for “Anastasia” before she took home a supporting award in 1975 for “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Eileen
Screenplay adapted by Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel
Ottessa Moshfegh’s debut novel, 2015’s Eileen, was an overwhelming literary success; it won the Pen Award for debut fiction and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. But beyond the accolades, the critical reception often included backhanded — sometimes bordering on misogynistic — disparagements of the protagonist. The book follows 24-year-old Eileen, stuck caring for her alcoholic father in her Massachusetts hometown while working as a secretary at the local juvenile correction facility. In first-person narrative, she fantasizes about moving to New York City and describes her dirty house, body issues and laxative abuse; the latter spurred readers to use terms like “disgusting” to describe the main character.

Moshfegh says she has complicated feelings about that element of the book’s publication, but when she sat down to write the screenplay for the Neon film alongside her husband,...

Endurance and single-minded determination have been the focus of filmmaking duo Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin with their documentary films Free Solo, Meru and The Rescue, and now, with Nyad, they examine those themes in a narrative feature, with Annette Bening in the starring role of long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, and Jodie Foster as her coach and best friend Bonnie Stoll. Based on Nyad’s memoir, Find a Way, the film follows Nyad’s multiple attempts to make the 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida, dodging sharks and dangerous jellyfish and weathering brutal waves. When Nyad finally succeeds at the age of 64, her message is, “It’s never too late to follow your dream.” Here, Vasarhelyi and Chin look back on how their documentarian skills fed into recreating an epic seafaring experience, and how both their marriage and their working relationship evolved as a result.

Annette Bening is reflecting on the life-changing experience of playing marathon swimmer Diana Nyad in the Netflix film Nyad.
At a screening this week in Los Angeles, Bening took part in a panel discussion about the film that focuses on Nyad’s real-life efforts in her 60s to become the first individual to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Also participating in the conversation were co-directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, co-star Jodie Foster, Nyad and Nyad’s coach Bonnie Stoll, whom Foster portrays in the movie.
“It has changed my life,” Bening said of swimming for the film. “I actually came to the conclusion recently that I’m a better swimmer now than even when I made the movie because I just kept swimming. I love it so much.”

It was five decades ago long distance swimmer Diana Nyad became part of the cultural landscape with her feats including a recording-setting circling of Manhattan and a 102-mile swim from the Bahamas to Florida she accomplished that in 27 hours. In 1978, Nyad made her first attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida but ended the quest after 40 hours. After segueing to a successful career as a sports journalist on ABC’s “Wild World of Sports” for over two decades, she decided at 60 to try again. She made three attempts felled by asthma, muscle fatigue, jellyfish and a tropical storm.
Nyad’s attempts at the swim were the subject of the 2013 documentary “The Other Shore.” When I talked to her for the L.A. Times a decade ago the then 64-year-old was preparing for her final attempt. “When I first started this in my 20s and when I started again when I turned...

“Nyad” is the real-life story of Diana Nyad (Annette Bening), a world class swimmer who decided, at age 60, that she wanted to do something that had previously seemed impossible after she’d tried it when she was younger and was unsuccessful – to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.
With her coach and former romantic partner Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster) at her side, she made several more attempts, battling box jellyfish, turbulent storms and constant naysayers. Somehow insurmountable feels like too mild a word to describe what she was attempting.
And it feels like filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin were keenly equipped to capture her story. The team, who are also married in real life, are Oscar-winners for their documentary “Free Solo” and have helmed several more movies about human beings pushing themselves to the brink (like “The Rescue” and “Return to Space”). 2023’s big sports biopic is here, and it’s a great time to put on your sports cap and spend some energy feeling motivated by the film. Now, we all know it’s not going to last, so have fun while it does. Nyad tells the inspiring story of long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad (as you may have guessed) on her big adventure of swimming the 110-mile course from Cuba to Key West, Florida. The film is mostly lighthearted and focuses on the teamwork that is required to achieve such a feat. As is common in the biopic world, the sports film stars an ensemble lead cast, with Annette Bening playing the role of relentless swimmer, Diana Nyad while Jodie Foster gets into the skin of her life-long best friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll. It’s rare to see a film that is solely focused on the activities of a woman...

I really admire Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi’s work, whose film Free Solo is arguably one of the finest documentaries ever made. They have a sense of capturing the human spirit on celluloid in a way that is very non-obtrusive. Perhaps their documentary filmmaking experience helps, and it’s clearly visible in their new film, the biopic titled Nyad. It’s a story chronicling Diana Nyad’s journey—the same Diana who rose to fame as the greatest long-distance swimmer in the 1970s. The film primarily focuses on the part when Nyad pumped herself up for one last attempt to achieve her unfulfilled dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida, and that too in her 60s. The result is an interesting look at the idea of success, meaning, and the masochism of pursuing excellence.
Jimmy and Elizabeth are drawn towards this quality of pursuit—this angle of the greatness of a performance.

Diana Nyad had been a world-class endurance athlete for years when, after swimming around Manhattan in a little under eight hours in 1975, she became a celebrity and a talk-show staple. At the age of 30, Nyad retired after breaking the open-ocean record by going from the Bahamas to Florida, one stroke at a time, in 27 hours. She transitioned into sportscasting, wrote books, hosted radio shows, did the occasional motivational speaker gig, and enjoyed the rewards of a life well lived.

On October 20, 2023, “Nyad” received a limited theatrical release from Netflix before it hits the streamer November 3. It tells the remarkable true story of athlete Diana Nyad (played by Oscar nominee Annette Bening) who, at the age of 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll (played by Oscar winner Jodie Foster), commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida.

Netflix’s “Nyad” tells the remarkable true story of swimmer Diana Nyad and her quest to swim from Cuba to Florida while in her sixties. Annette Bening stars in the titular role while Jodie Foster turns in a key supporting performance as Nyad’s coach, Bonnie Stoll. “Nyad,” which is out in US theaters on Oct. 20 before heading to Netflix on November 2, could well earn Bening a fifth Oscar nomination for her title role as the impressive swimmer. But, before that, let’s take a look back at Bening’s four Oscar races to date.
Bening first found herself on the academy’s radar in 1991 for her role in “The Grifters,” Stephen Frears‘ crime thriller about a conman (John Cusack) who finds himself torn between his mother (Anjelica Huston) and girlfriend (Bening), both of whom are con-artists themselves. Sometimes we just need to see a flick that gets us motivated. To get us off our “duff”…after we watch it, of course. That was certainly the case with the original Rocky series which carried over into the current Creed franchise (who hasn’t heard Bill Conti’s score as they begin a run). Yes, the sports genre can be inspiring, plus you can double that when it’s a true tale, a “sports-biopic”. But could you triple the “push” when the movie’s subject is still with us? It’s a good possibility when a couple of superb actresses combine talents with two Oscar-winning documentary filmmakers to tell the tale of the long-distance swimming legend known as Nyad.

Annette Bening refuses to follow the current tide of portraying surface-level “strong” characters.

Netflix has released the brand new trailer for Nyad. Nyad tells the remarkable true story of athlete Diana Nyad who, at the age of 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach, commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida.
