Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.
The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.
Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.
Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.
The festival will open on 6 June with a screening of Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language film and draw to a close on 9 June with Sean Wang...

David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) is directing a genre movie for J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot that’s so secretive we didn’t even have a title. Until now. And we also have a release date!
Deadline reports today that the mysterious event movie from Bad Robot and David Robert Mitchell is titled Flowervale Street, with an IMAX release date set for May 16, 2025.
Now that we have a title and a release date, what about a plot synopsis? Well, that part is still a secret. We have literally no idea what Flowervale Street is about at this time, but we’d like to at least recklessly speculate that it’s a Cloverfield Universe movie. It’s more than likely not, mind you – this is a Warner Bros. Pictures project versus a Paramount release, for starters – but there’s just something about that title that feels very… 10 Cloverfield Lane, isn’t there?...

Paparazzi photos of Anne Hathaway reveal that filming has officially begun on It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s next film, currently known as Flowervale Street. More here:

For those who have been fans since his pre-It Follows breakout with The Myth of the American Sleepover, it was disappointing to see director David Robert Mitchell land in director’s jail after the debacle of Under the Silver Lake. The brilliantly layered neo-noir premiered in competition at Cannes Film Festival in 2018 (where we were on the right side of history), then delayed by A24 a handful of times only to quietly launch in theaters nearly a year later, followed by a digital release a mere few days following that, wrapping up with a domestic gross of less than $50,000. After six long years of trying to get another film off the ground, the director has finally begun production on his next feature in Atlanta.

Abrams and Warner Bros. Pictures. Convery and Stella will play the children of Hathaway and McGregor, we hear. The film has been previously categorized as a thriller.
At only 14, Convery has led the dystopian sci-fi series “Sweet Tooth” for two seasons. It was adapted from a popular comic book series and produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. Convery most recently starred in Elizabeth Banks’ gory water cooler hit “Cocaine Bear,” alongside alongside Keri Russell and O’Shea Jackson Jr. He is currently in production on Academy Award winner Guillermo Del Toro’s take on “Frankenstein.

Back in 2012, Maisy Stella and her older sister Lennon Stella went viral with their YouTube cover of the Robyn song “Call Your Girlfriend.” Soon after, the sisters landed acting roles on the TV series Nashville (pictured above), where their musical performances continued as they appeared on 119 episodes of the show. Nashville wrapped up back in 2018, and six years later Maisy Stella returned to the acting world with her first film, the comedy My Old Ass, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and sees Stella sharing the screen with Aubrey Plaza (they’re pictured together below). Amazon MGM Studios will be giving My Old Ass a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on August 2nd – and while we wait for that, Variety reports that Stella has landed her second film role. She is joining previously announced cast members Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway in a mysterious...

Maisy Stella has joined Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor in It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s mystery IMAX thrill ride, Flowervale Street.
Here’s a story that caught our attention this morning, given that it’s added a rising star to a project featuring an ensemble of supremely talented actors who have a knack for attaching themselves to interesting projects.
We’ve heard stories for a while now that David Robert Mitchell, the director of It Follows and Under The Silver Lake is making another film, itself a notable bit of news given that he’s only made three films since 2010’s The Myth Of The American Sleepover, his ultra low-budget debut. Having such a short filmography that boasts two critically-lauded films on it means that Mitchell’s return to directing (for the first time since 2018’s Under The Silver Lake) was always going to generate excitement.
Then there’s that cast to consider.

David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) is at the helm of a mysterious new genre movie for Bad Robot and Warner Bros., starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway. Per Variety, Sundance breakout star Maisy Stella (My Old Ass) has nabbed the third lead role.
Maisy Stella joins previously announced cast members Ewan McGregor (Doctor Sleep) and Anne Hathaway (Colossal).
Plot details remain tightly guarded since the project was announced, but the movie is categorized as a thriller. Considering Bad Robot is behind the Cloverfield films, Overlord, Super 8, and more, it feels safe to presume the untitled project will be a genre thriller of some sort.
Originally reported by Jeff Sneider and John Rocha on their show “The Hot Mic” last year, the mysterious new project is reportedly set in the 1980s… and features dinosaurs?! If so, Hathaway’s turn in Colossal might make her well poised to take on the prehistoric beasts.

The deal is pegged in the $15 million range. After a theatrical window, the movie will move to streaming on Prime Video.
My Old Ass stars Maisy Stella as Elliot, a teen in a small Canadian town who is in her final month of summer before college when her and her friends imbibe in some ill-begotten shrooms. During her trip, Elliot comes face-to-face with her older self, played by Aubrey Plaza, who gives her words of wisdom and a warning: don’t fall in love with a boy named Chad.

The high-concept film — which was produced by LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, with Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales — made its world premiere on Saturday night in a sold-out screening at the Eccles Theatre in Park City, Ut. The deal is for roughly $15 million. Sundance Buzz Title ‘My Old Ass’ Selling To Amazon MGM For $15M+ WW; Wide Theatrical Release Planned
Exclusive: In another big Sundance deal upwards of $15 million, Amazon MGM is in final negotiations to acquire the Sundance buzz title My Old Ass. This was a hotly contested deal that today had several suitors in the mix for a crowd-pleasing coming-of-age film that has garnered strong reviews and reaction since it launched in the Premieres category on January 20 at the Eccles Theatre.
Amazon MGM is targeting a wide theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada, and they’re working out the strategy for international. Pic will then move to Prime Video to stream globally. It is the biggest Sundance deal for a theatrical release; Netflix paid $17 million for the genre thriller It’s What’s Inside, but that film is headed for a big streamer rollout.

It’s always a welcome surprise to encounter a fresh face who’s also a natural screen presence, which is very much the case with the captivating Maisy Stella in My Old Ass. Not to undersell the newcomer’s individuality, but I kept getting a crunchy granola version of Clueless-era Alicia Silverstone, which is no faint praise. The fact that Stella is often bouncing off Aubrey Plaza in peerless sardonic form just sweetens the deal. Megan Park’s enjoyable second feature is a warm blend of comedy, romance and whimsical collapsed-time fantasy, albeit grounded in the protagonist’s real world.
Not since Toy Story 3 wielded its power to reduce grown-ass adults to puddles of tears has a movie been so in touch with the tender feelings associated with leaving home and saying a definitive goodbye to childhood, wistfully contemplating what we take with us and what we leave behind.

Elliott (Maisy Stella) is ready for her life to start. The last 18 years? That’s been killing time, practice, kid stuff, and as we meet the teen on her 18th birthday, mere weeks before she’s about to leave her cozy Canadian lakeside community for college in Toronto (read: the real world!), Elliott is hellbent on leaving that stuff behind. In Megan Park’s warm-hearted “My Old Ass,” Elliott is forced to grapple — most unexpectedly, most literally — with the past and the present and the future, and all the iterations of her that will populate those time periods.
First, there are the mushrooms. Elliott and her best pals Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler) and Ro (Kerrice Brooks) ingest the hallucinogens to celebrate that key birthday, an experience that sees Ruthie talking to animals and Ro dancing to music only she can hear… and Elliott? She finds herself. More correctly: her old self finds her.

The 22-year-old actor has kept a relatively very low profile over the past year, since the release of his Netflix show Wednesday and since allegations against him came out.
Also in attendance at the Sundance premiere were Percy‘s co-stars Maddie Ziegler, Maisy Stella, Aubrey Plaza, Maria Dizzia, Seth Isaac Johnson, Kerrice Brooks and Carter Trozzolo, as well as writer and director Megan Park, and producer Tom Ackerly.

Park City – Coming up with a new twist for a teen movie ain’t easy. There have been so many over the decades that someone has likely already tried it. That’s why director and screenwriter Megan Park deserves mad props for the setup to “My Old Ass” which had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival this weekend. Oh, and spoiler, she then takes that concept and knocks it out of the park with one of the best coming-of-age comedies we can remember in forever.

Heading into the fest, Megan Park’s sophomore feature My Old Ass was one of the most anticipated of the fest. It takes some time to fall in love with 18-year-old Elliott in “My Old Ass.” As played by Maisy Stella, she’s young and self-involved, so focused on heading off to college in the big city that she’s kind of a jerk to everyone around her (especially her small-town cranberry-farming family). Maybe young adult audiences won’t think so. Canadian actor-turned-auteur Megan Park’s sweetly insightful coming-of-age comedy is intended for them — whereas adults might not have so much patience for the way Stella’s impulsive character takes for granted what are arguably her best years.
Don’t worry, the movie is great, and Elliott eventually grows on you. Besides, her initially off-putting persona is kind of the point of Park’s older-and-wiser second feature, which follows the director’s terrific SXSW-winning debut “The Fallout.” Park plays a magic trick early in the film: Elliott and her besties (Maddie Ziegler...

The title alone was enough to convince Aubrey Plaza to appear in “My Old Ass,” an offbeat coming-of-age story that was warmly received during its premiere Saturday night at the Sundance Film Festival.
“It all just made sense to me,” Plaza told the sold-out crowd at the Eccles Theater in Park City, Utah. “‘My Old Ass,’ I was like, ‘Oh man.'”
And when Plaza spent time with Megan Park, the film’s writer and director, and discovered her affinity for unusual means of transportation, Aubrey knew she had signed on to the perfect project. Park was sporting a life vest during their first Zoom meeting, a sign of her love of all things nautical.
“Megan is the only director I’ve ever worked with who Jet Skis to work,” Plaza said. Park also picked up Plaza in a paddle boat for their initial meeting. “She paddled over me,” Plaza recalled.

The 40th Sundance Film Festival kicks off Thursday in snow-covered Park City, Utah. In the wake of twin strikes and an indie biz still recovering from the Covid pandemic, it’s difficult to read how hungry buyers are for films that are mostly light on starpower and an overtly commercial premise.

No one quite knows what to expect of the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival, the first major fest following the end of the dual Hollywood strikes.
The strikes, which stopped production during the months when many Sundance features normally film, have had some impact on the lineup of U.S.-produced titles, with insiders noting that many titles needed some more time, post-strikes, to finish production than the Sundance submissions deadlines allowed. A slimmed U.S. Dramatic Competition section is now 10 films, down from 13.
As for sales, a top agent pegs this year’s market as landing “somewhere between last year’s Sundance and this year’s Toronto.” That is to say, there likely will be several big sellers like Chloe Domont’s Fair Play (Sundance) and Richard Linklater’s Hitman (Toronto), both of which landed at Netflix in big eight-figure deals, followed by a long tail of...
