Shudder announced a while back that they had renewed The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs for a supersized sixth season that will make sure legendary drive-in critic and movie host Joe Bob will be an even more consistent presence on the streaming service throughout the year. The season 6 action kicked off with a special (A Tribute to Roger Corman) that aired last Friday, and on March 29th the season will really get rolling with its new approach. In the previous seasons, Joe Bob would host double features on a weekly basis. This time, episodes will air every other Friday night, and instead of the usual double features, Joe Bob will be presenting “single titles and surprises”. Single titles every other Friday is how Shudder intends to spread the episodes out over a longer period of the year. In anticipation of this new season of blood, breasts, and beasts, JoBlo...

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. “You’ve become part of a bigger universe. You just don’t know it yet. “While speaking with Syfy Wire, producer Bradley J. Fischer revealed that The Last Voyage of the Demeter almost ended with a cameo from Professor Abraham Van Helsing.
“We went through a lot of different approaches to the story, but nothing that was wildly different than the movie that we ended up with,” Fischer explained. “We actually had one ending for quite a while. The scene in the tavern was Clemens [Corey Hawkins] being approached by a strange, shadowy dude, who starts talking to him, seems to have some knowledge of the experiences that he went through, and introduces himself as Van Helsing. Then we kind of left it there.“

51 years ago television viewers were introduced to a monster in modern times. But luckily, they were introduced to a hero who was willing to shine the light on that monster and stop him. That hero’s name was Carl Kolchak and the TV movie that gave birth to the legend of the intrepid reporter was The Night Stalker. As we’ve covered here previously on JoBlo Horror, The Night Stalker became one of the biggest TV movies of all time when it was released and with ratings and accolades like that, it wasn’t hard to see that Kolchak’s search for the truth (which we all know is out there) was far from over. Yesterday, we published an article detailing Nicolas Cage’s plans to turn away from film acting after his next few movies, a notion he doubled down on in a new interview with Uproxx’s Mike Ryan. But Cage also opened up about potentially getting back in the game should an enjoyable project arise. “I’m not saying no entirely. I’m saying if something came along that I thought had some pop to it, some spark to it, that maybe could be fun for folks to revisit, like a Face/Off 2 or Ghost Rider, that’s another conversation.”
It turns out that Cage has a particular soft spot for Face/Off, mentioning that he hasn’t seen director John Woo, who was once his close friend, in a long time. “Well, John… I haven’t spoken to him in a very long time, but at one time we were pretty close.

In the early eighties, Arnold Schwarzenegger had become a star through his role in Conan the Barbarian. Following a critically maligned but successful sequel, Conan the Destroyer, Schwarzenegger sought to move into more contemporary roles. His contract with producer Dino De Laurentis was ending, but the legendary mogul wanted to use Schwarzenegger’s star power to launch another adaption of Robert E. Howard’s work – Red Sonja. The resulting film was a star vehicle for Brigitte Nielsen, who some saw as a potential female action icon, and Schwarzenegger, due to his contract with De Laurentis, had no choice but to appear in a critical supporting role (for which he would be top-billed) opposite Nielsen, who played the titular character.

The 70s were a time when television would seem to try anything at least once. Science Fiction was one of the main genres where this was very true. Thanks to the success of series like Star Trek, and Lost in Space there was a deluge of, off beat and actually good genre TV (as we explored on last week’s Land of the Lost episode). Typically it was with some sort of toy tie-in or angle to get children to watch and/or buy something. And just wait until Star Wars happened.
But, the early 70s would find a new kind of hero to grab the hearts and minds of kids across the country and he’d bring with him some of the coolest toys around. Because, he was literally made up of metal and plastic himself.

So we thought it would be dandy to get our core staff to share with you their 10 favorite (not best) horror movies from the 80’s. Yes, it was tough on all of us to pick just 10 – but we knocked a few back and did what we could. Scroll down and peep our choices!

Last week it had seemed that the reign of Barbenheimer was over when Jason Statham came in between the two, but like all things that are meant to be together, this week sees the duo return to their rightful spots at one and two on the charts. Of course number one is the juggernaut that is Barbie with an additional $33.7 million added to its massive $526.3 million domestic take and nearly $1.2 billion in worldwide grosses. Those numbers officially put Greta Gerwig at the top of the charts for highest grossing female director of all time, pretty good for only her third solo directing gig. I wonder if she will keep her streak alive at the Academy Awards where she has been nominated for both of her previous films, Director and Screenplay for 2017’s Lady Bird and Screenplay for 2019’s Little Women. I would put money on it right now that she does,...

Numbers have begun rolling in for the weekend and as expected Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is remaining in the top spot for a fourth week in a row with an estimated $30 million. That number puts the Margot Robbie/ Ryan Gosling fronted film at over half a billion dollars domestic, officially making it the highest grossing movie directed by a woman at both the domestic box office and global box office Even more impressive is that Barbie passed that half a billion dollar mark in just 22 days, which is faster than both Top Gun: Maverick (30 days) and Super Mario Bros. Movie (31 days).
Reclaiming second place this weekend is Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer with an estimated $16-$17 million and a running total just over $262.2 million at the domestic box office while its global take hits over $600 million. Absolutely insane numbers for a 3-hour biopic.

Spoilers for The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Based on a single chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the crew of the merchant ship Demeter as they attempt to survive the voyage from Transylvania to London, all while being hunted by the legendary vampire. We all know the Dracula story as it’s been adapted to film dozens of times over the last century, but what are the chances that we might see a sequel to The Last Voyage of the Demeter?

It looks like Universal’s long-gestating Last Voyage of the Demeter had a modest preview night, earning $750k at the box office, according to Deadline. That means the film is only on track for a single-digit opening, with the trade noting it opened similarly to last summer’s The Invitation, which only eked out a $6.8 million opening weekend. That’s not a great result for Universal’s movie, which has gotten mixed reviews but was well-liked by hardcore horror fans, including our own Jessica Dwyer (read her review). Our own Brad Hamerly pegged the film as opening around $9 million, which seems higher than the preview night figures suggest.
Indeed, the weekend is set to be dominated by Barbie, which should have a north of $30 million weekend, with Oppenheimer also expected to make a strong showing at around $17.5 million. It’ll be interesting to see if either of last week’s new releases,...

If you’re a fan of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, you know the name Demeter. As conveyed in the classic novel, the ship was the unfortunate vessel used to transport Dracula’s casket from Transylvania to London, and was depicted through a chapter called “The Captain’s Log”. In movies, the fate of the Demeter was usually only depicted in passing, but now Universal has made an entire feature film about this blood soaked journey, sporting a strong cast headed by Corey Hawkins, as a doctor who joins the unfortunate crew.

There’s a gold standard that horror hosts are held to. The icons become as popular as the movies that they show. Zacherley, Elvira, and Vampira are some of the names that come to mind, all of them inherently macabre in their own way. Most horror hosts have something ooky and spooky about them. And then there’s the one and only Joe Bob Briggs. Joe Bob is his own sort of creature, a Drive In Cowboy who loves blood, breasts, and beasts… and going on long, amazing rants about all the things he has a problem with in the world.

A week after Renfield and The Pope’s Exorcist failed to open in double digits, we have Evil Dead Rise surpassing expectations with a $23.5 million opening weekend. Pretty solid when you consider the original 1981 classic made just $2.8 million, 1987’s Evil Dead II made $5.9 million, 1992’s classic Army of Darkness pulled in $11.5 million while 2013’s re-imagining saw the cult series soar to new heights by opening with $25.7 million on its way to a $97.5 million worldwide total. With pretty solid reviews, including a 9/10 from our own Jessica Dwyer and an 81% audience score (which is actually pretty solid for a horror film), this gore fest has all the makings for a decent run at the box office, especially when you consider the budget for the film was kept at a modest $19 million as it was originally meant to drop directly onto HBO Max.

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin has been promising lots of blood for some time, and now that the movie has hit theaters, he wants viewers to get as comfortable with it as possible…as if it were a character of its own.
Speaking with Variety, Cronin (2019’s The Hole in the Ground) said of the Evil Dead Rise blood use, “We used 6,500 liters [1,717 gallons] of blood on the movie…That is real, sticky, cooked movie blood. We had to hire out this industrial kitchen to cook the blood and keep it fresh, be able to heat it up, because characters are covered in it.” He added, “There was a lot of management of liquid in this movie. I wanted blood to be a character, so it was important we got the viscosity and look just right.”

Bruce Campbell is no stranger to dealing with the supernatural, so it’s no surprise that Variety has reported that he’s joined the cast of Hysteria!, Peacock’s satanic panic series.
Per the official description, “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.” Sounds… interesting. Bruce Campbell will play Chief Dandridge in Hysteria!, who is described as “a small-town police chief whose understanding of his community is put to the test after a disturbing series of murders, disappearances, and unexplained phenomena.”

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, is set to reach theatres next week, on April 14th, and while the primary draw is the chance to see Cage play Dracula, the movie also includes a couple special treats for fans of the horror genre. Among the cast members are Caroline Williams, best known for playing the heroine Stretch in 1986’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and William Ragsdale, who previously crossed paths with vampires in 1985’s Fright Night and the 1988 sequel Fright Night Part 2. Williams is playing a character named Vanessa, while Ragsdale takes on the role of Older Priest. Director Lee Cronin is riding high off the great reviews he’s getting for Evil Dead Rise, and now it looks like he’s got another horror flick set to go at New Line, with them setting up another movie for the director called The Thaw. According to THR, the film is “set years after the polar ice caps have melted and the sea levels have risen, the story centers on a group of survivors at sea searching for a new home. Their prayers are answered with the discovery of an inhabitable town until, that is, they encounter a new nightmare living just below the water’s surface.” The writer, Jeremy Passmore, has a writing credit on New Line’s San Andreas, as well as the Red Dawn remake from 2012.
Cronin’s hiring proves that WB, which owns New Line, is high on the director following his turn at the helm of Evil Dead Rise.

The April 14th theatrical release date for Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, is swiftly creeping up on us – and with that date just three weeks away, a new trailer for the film has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.
Based on a treatment written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Renfield was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty). In Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.
In this film, Renfield has been serving the bloodsucker for centuries, and now he has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on...

New Orleans is a city of mystery and the supernatural. It’s filled with legends, history, and quite a lot of voodoo. And now you can add Renfield and Dracula to the mix.
Renfield hits theaters this April (and has a brand-new trailer coming out tomorrow) and stars Nicholas Hoult as Renfield and Nic Cage as his master, Dracula (read our Nicolas Cage interview here). It’s a monster of a relationship and it has spanned for over a hundred years. And now Renfield has had enough of bringing his master his dinner and then cleaning up after him.
Directed by Chris McKay (director of the underrated The Tomorrow War) from an idea by Robert Kirkman and written by Ryan Ridley, Renfield is a mix of classic Universal horror, silent film style, splatter, and comedy. The cast is top tier with Hoult and Cage joined by Ben Schwartz, Awkwafina, and Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Albert Pyun’s 1982 fantasy adventure The Sword and the Sorcerer may not be the most fondly remembered epic of its era, but it was wildly successful. In the early 1980s, the sword and soccer genre experienced a revival, with Hollywood anticipating that Conan the Barbarian, Universal’s mega-budget adaptation of the Robert E. Howard pulp novels would be the next Star Wars. It didn’t quite happen, but before it even reached theaters, dozens of low-budget Conan riffs were in the works. One that hit theaters first was 1982’s The Sword and the Sorcerer, which grossed a spectacular (for the era) $39.1 million, actually outgrossing Conan in North America by 1 million dollars (at a fraction of the budget).
In this episode of Fantasizing About Fantasy Films, which is written and narrated by Jessica Dwyer and edited by Bill Mazzola, we dig into the making of the late Albert Pyun classic. Were...

With Bruce Willis’ recent, tragic frontotemporal dementia diagnosis revealed, we here at JoBlo thought the time was right to celebrate the show that made him a star, Moonlighting, in which he co-starred with Cybill Shepherd. At the time, Willis was a complete unknown, with only a one-episode guest starring role as a bad guy on Miami Vice to show for his early years in Hollywood. All that changed when the creators of Moonlighting were looking for a fresh face to play a wisecracking private eye named David Addison. On the show, he would be paired with Cybill Shepherd, who was then already a pretty big star thanks to a run of movies in the seventies that included The Last Picture Show and Taxi Driver. In this, she would play a former model who, after having her fortune embezzled, discovers she owns a low-rent detective agency run by Willis’ Addison.

The Greatest American Hero is a show that’s much beloved by folks of a certain generation. If you grew up in the seventies or eighties, the theme song is instantly iconic. In fact, the track “Believe it or Not” by Joey Scarbury actually made it all the way to the number 2 spot on the Billboard Charts. It was actually a bigger hit than the show itself, which only ran for two and a half seasons before being cancelled with five unaired episodes in early 1983. Yet, it remains part of the pop culture, with talk of rebooting it every now and then.
A reboot would definitely make sense given how obsessed people are with superheroes, with the red and black suit the hero wears iconic in its own way. The show starred cult horror icon William Katt (House) as Ralph Hanley, a teacher who’s endowed with superhuman abilities by aliens,...

1981’s Clash of the Titans signals the end of an era. In the fifties, sixties and even part of the seventies, stop-motion maestro Ray Harryhausen was the guy you went to if you wanted to do a fantasy epic. His stop-motion animation brought so many fantasy adventures to life, such as Jason and the Argonauts, Mysterious Island and the various Sinbad movies. He was easily one of the people responsible for truly bringing magic into the movies, but the game started to change in the seventies, especially once Star Wars was released. By the time other fantasy epics like Conan the Barbarian were being planned, Harryhausen was at work on what would be his most ambitious movie to date, Clash of the Titans.
Telling the myth of Perseus, Harryhausen would face some of the most significant logistical challenges of his career, as he’d have to use his effects to portray Medusa,...

One of the most iconic shows of the 1980s was, without a doubt, The A-Team. Starring screen veteran George Peppard, Dirk Benedict, Dwight Schultz, and the legendary Mr. T, the show premiered in January 1983 and became a pop culture phenomenon. It helped that the show came out hot on the heels of Rocky III, with Mr. T already in the zeitgeist for playing the unforgettable villain, Clubber Lang. Here, as B.A. Baracus, T would adopt a much more family-friendly persona. While he was the breakout star, audiences also loved Peppard as Hannibal, the wannabe actor mastermind, Benedict as Faceman, the ladies’ man, and Schultz as Murdock, the crazy one. The story of an underground crew of Nam vets who are framed for a crime they didn’t commit, the show ran for five seasons before slipping out of fashion towards the end of the decade when the mix of...

While the sword and sorcery genre dominated genre cinema in the first half of the eighties, thanks to the influence of Conan the Barbarian, one film predates this trend. That movie is – Hawk the Slayer! If you’re based in the UK, you might be saying to yourself, “oh man, Hawk the Slayer rules,” or maybe, “Hawk the Slayer sucks.” But, if you’re outside English, you’re probably thinking, Wtf is Hawk the Slayer?
This is a big-budget UK attempt at a blockbuster that arguably owes more to the influence of Star Wars (mainly its box office) than anything else. It was meant to start a blockbuster film saga, but underwhelming box office and withering reviews meant this was a one-off. The brainchild of writer-director Terry Marcel, the film stars John Terry (later famous as Jack’s dad on Lost and a one time Felix Leiter in The Living Daylights...

The Littlest Hobo is one of the craziest TV shows of all time. If you grew up in Canada during the ’80s and ’90s, you were undoubtedly raised on the adventures of this nameless German Shepherd, who trotted along from town-to-town, helping those in need. Throughout six seasons, the dog rescued children in danger, foiled a Soviet spy plot (yes – he fought the Cold War), prevented a plague outbreak, solved murders and helped innocent folks prove their innocence and more. Here’s the kicker – the dog didn’t have any magic powers or anything dumb like that. He was just a Very good dog, albeit an incredibly intelligent one. It’s a fun piece of Canadian camp nostalgia that’s gained a major cult following in the U.S. Tons of seventies and eighties character actors show up in various episodes, including Leslie Nielsen, DeForest Kelly, Michael Ironside and many more.
