When Steven Soderbergh saw this sci-fi film (with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score) at Slamdance, which takes place on the same dates and in the same location as Sundance, the experienced filmmaker paid debut director Andrew Patterson the most priceless complement of all:
“In my mind, there are three components to directing that a filmmaker should have some grasp of. The first being narrative, the second being performance and the third being the camera. […] It’s rare to see somebody that […] had a grasp of all three, […] not only in one movie but in a first film.”
Maybe that's why Amazon Studios is patiently waiting for the next idea from a debutant who spent ten years thinking about his first movie and made it for only a million dollars.

So…what is sci-fi? It’s not the easiest question to answer when “sci-fi elements” permeate so many of the biggest blockbusters: thought-provoking genre concepts flattened into one-size-fits-all franchise fodder that make countless titles “feel” and, on occasion, even look the same.
Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived in the past two years, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively.

It’s that time year again—when one might, upon their daily neighborhood perambulation, casually stumble upon a man dressed in a blood-splattered full-body jumpsuit and think to themself, this is perfectly fine and normal. But that’s the Halloween season for you, when the ghosts and goblins and AMC-obsessed Nicole Kidmans are out in full force for their yearly Halloween rituals.
Aside from meticulously inserting razor blades into the apples we all intend to hand out to local children, everyone’s favorite part of the Halloween season is—of course—the excuse to binge-watch our favorite horror movies, from the silly-scary (Hocus Pocus), to the fun-scary (Trick R Treat), to the scary-scary (The Evil Dead) or the really scary-scary (any news channel). In fact, horror movies have long been an integral part of the indie film ecosystem—turning minuscule budgets into huge box office numbers and launching the...

Between building safer school environments and returning to live-action film, Matthew McConaughey opens up about the incredible work he’s been doing, both on and off camera and whether he gets the same satisfaction helping others that he gets from acting.
“You know, I love making movies. I just went and acted for the first time in quite a few years. And this film called ‘The Rivals of Amziah King’, boy I rekindled. I absolutely love it,” he told Et Canada’s Cheryl Hickey of the upcoming project. “Being singularly obsessed with one character and just my whole world revolving around that character, it was like being on vacation.”

Yesterday, the 30th Annual Gotham Awards were held, marking yet another notable moment in the awards and precursor season. Unsurprisingly, Best Feature went to Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland, while Breakthrough Series (Long Form) went to Watchmen. Aside from that, there were some low level surprises throughout. Nicole Beharie scored in Best Actress for Miss Juneteenth, over Frances McDormand for Nomadland or Yuh-Jung Youn for Minari. Breakthrough Actor went to Kingsley Ben-Adir for One Night in Miami… over Sidney Flanigan for Never Rarely Sometimes Always. So, not necessarily the expected results, but strong ones overall. Read on for more… Here are the Gotham results from last night: Best Feature Nomadland Best Documentary A Thousand Cuts and Time (tie) Best International Feature Identifying Features Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award Andrew Patterson, The Vast of Night Best Screenplay Radha Blank,...

This year’s awards season, delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, finally got underway with the announcement of the 2021 Gotham Awards nominations on November 12 (last year’s big reveal was on Oct. 24). These awards are presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) and honor the best of the year as determined by small committees of film journalists and festival programmers. The five Best Feature nominees, which were all directed by women, are: “The Assistant,” “First Cow,” “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” “Nomadland” and “Relic.” Scroll down to see the complete list of contenders.
Will these awards preview the Oscars? Perhaps. Last year’s Best Feature award went to “Marriage Story,” which did go on to reap a Best Picture bid. However, that was the exception rather than the rule. Indeed, its rival Gotham Awards nominees — “The Farewell,” “Hustlers,” “Uncut Gems” and “Waves” — were all snubbed by the Academy Awards.

The longest awards season ever kicks off today with the announcement for the 2020 Gotham Awards nominees. The awards ceremony, backed by the Independent Film Project (IFP), is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. As always, the Gothams are the first stop on the awards season journey, which this year will last until the Oscars ceremony all the way on April 25. The 2020 Gotham Awards are set to take place January 11, 2021, over a month delay from when the ceremony’s usually held, on the first Monday after Thanksgiving.
While the Gotham Awards don’t always overlap with the Oscars, they often play a key role in elevating films into the overall awards conversation since the ceremony is the first of the season. Past acting winners like Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”), Awkwafina (“The Farewell”), Ethan Hawke (“First Reformed”), and Toni Collette (“Hereditary”) all had Oscar momentum following the Gothams, with Driver nabbing an Oscar nom for Best Actor.

“Slamdance ‘21 isn’t about compromise because of the pandemic. It’s about community, accessibility and growth. It’s about Slamdance’s future and the love of independent film,” said Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter.
Slamdance said Thursday that its in-person festival will take a break from Park City, Ut and move to Joshua Tree, CA. 2020, as well as being an all-round garbage fire, is likely to go down as a strange year for film. Almost all of year’s biggest titles remain in limbo, waiting for cinemas to be able to safely reopen. That said, more than half way through the year, we have now seen a lot of excellent films getting released. Some managed to sneak in to cinemas in ‘the time before’, but many have made their debuts via streaming or paid VOD.
Even with a much reduced slate, there are still great films out there that have either got lost in the shuffle or might not have had the mainstream appeal to connect with an audience as wide as they deserve. Here, we’ve got several of the Hey U Guys staff together to pick some of their favourites of 2020 so far that you might not have caught up with yet.

The opening scene of The Vast of Night, a new science fiction film now streaming on Amazon Prime, wears its influences on its sleeve. While it doesn’t mention The Twilight Zone by name, the film begins with a static-bedeviled television being watched in the middle of the day, like the memory of a late ‘50s childhood half-forgotten. The story you’re about to see, explains a disembodied voice, is a trip into “Paradox Theatre.” This show-within-a-movie might be fictional, but the moment it represents in science fiction and American culture is not.
Set in the twilight of the Eisenhower years, The Vast of Night is the debut film from director Andrew Patterson, which is all the more impressive since it so inhabits its time and place in American life with authentic nostalgia. At the tail end of what Don McLean romanticized in “American Pie,...

An indie sci-fi, reportedly rejected by 18 film festivals before it landed the audience award at Slamdance in 2019, The Vast of Night is the latest buzzy release to be picked up by Amazon Prime. The buzz is justified. Set in a small town in New Mexico and taking place over a single night, The Vast of Night is ‘50s set sci-fi in the spirit of cold war classics like The Blob and Invasion of The Body Snatchers, with a modern twist and an extra meta-layer.
A film within a film, The Vast of Night is framed as an episode of fictional Twilight Zone-esque show Paradox Theater, with occasional camera pull-backs where we see the action in black and white on a small TV. Far from being distancing, it’s a smart device that contextualizes what you’re seeing: a B-movie story with whip-smart dialogue that looks and sounds like elevated arthouse,...

Fifties sci-fi thriller “The Vast of Night” is the perfect drive-in feature to watch under the stars. Produced for under $1 million, it’s the kind of “It Came From the Outer Space” B-movie you’d find on Chiller Theatre. But it’s directed with a sure hand by Oklahoma City commercial director Andrew Patterson, who masterminded — and paid for — this cinematic tour de force. (He turns 38 this month.)
Set in New Mexico, this atmospheric UFO movie unfolds over one night and conjures up such small-town pictures as “American Graffiti” and “Super 8.” While town folks are rooting for the home team at a high school basketball game, our two brainy leads, radio DJ Everett (Jake Horowitz) and switchboard operator Fay (Sierra McCormick), band together to track down some strange, unidentifiable noises, arguing about whether they’re terrestrial or alien.
Since Patterson’s audacious debut won the audience award at Slamdance...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on May 29th, 2020, discussing new releases “The High Note” (VOD) and “The Vast of Night” (Amazon Prime) and Bonus review.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The High Note In a case of life imitating art, Tracie Ellis Ross (the Mom on TV’s “Blackish” and Diana Ross’s daughter) portrays a popular singer diva who became famous in the 1990s, with a boatload of hits but no music in ten years, and Dakota Johnson is her transitioning assistant Maggie. This brightly paced story makes the most of its music industry setting. It’s currently available on streaming platforms through Video-On-Demand. 3.5/5 stars.
“The High Note” features Tracie Ellis Ross, Dakota Johnson, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Ice Cube. Written by Flora Gresson. Directed by Nisha Ganatra. Rated “PG-13” “The Vast of Night” features Jake Horowitz, Sierra McCormick and Bruce Davis.
