Review of Bayan Ko

Bayan Ko (1984)
Powerful!
18 July 2004
The best Philippines film I have ever seen.

No-holds-barred story of how a man - and his family - get into a cycle of decline and poverty, leading to further poverty and ultimately into crime and death.

Westerners should get real and realize how lucky we are. The scene where Turing tries to buy, prescription, drugs for his wife (in hospital having given birth prematurely) and has to decide which ones he can actually afford and which ones will have to be omitted will live with me forever.

Lino Brocka was never a laugh a minute but he could tell a story on celluloid and this was his finest.
