BIG SPOILERS AHEAD......
This is NOT the story of a woman who is selfishly trying to keep her ex from his child, or who views him only as a source of income. This is the story of a loving mother who also happens to have a busy career as a doctor. She admittedly loves her job and spends a lot of time at it. But hey, realistically, I doubt Daddy was paying enough that she could totally support herself and her son on it, so she also needed the income.
The real story is well captured in the title..."Because Mommy Works".
"Because Mommy Works" and hubby's new wife doesn't, he claims his home would be a better place for little Willie. Note that HE isn't going to stay home and raise Willie--something he thinks his ex wife should do. His new wife is going to do it for him. It was postively sickening to hear the new wife piously explaining to Abbey that "I used to have a career, too, but I decided my children were more important" or some such nonesense.
For a woman to lose custody of her child to her husband so that his new wife can play mommy, and then to have to pay child support besides gives just one more example of how screwed up our system is.
And for the record, I AM a working mom who had two children I adore, I don't think that working makes someone a bad mom or that staying at home necessarily makes someone a good mom, and I don't think "who can be a stay at home mommy" should be the decidng factor in a custody case.
