Once in a Lifetime (1994 TV Movie)
Sugary and sappy-may prove fatal to diabetics
5 June 2002
Daphne is not a lucky woman-she is widowed in a fire that also kills her young daughter.Pregnant at the time the son she gives birth to is profoundly deaf Luckily she has literary gifts and she is able to make a career for herself as a novelist. She reflects on her life as she lies in a hospital bed having been struck by a car-her somewhat obsessive care for her son,a dalliance with a Hollywood star and the love of stalwart Doctor Dane, the specialist on deafness and whom her son loves

It crawls to a bland and predictable climax with only a slightly arch turn from Duncan Regehr as the selfish but charming star Justin Wakefield to enliven proceedings

Romantic tosh that may satisfy those who have read Ms Steel's novels but leave the cynics unconverted
