Review of Big Daddy

Big Daddy (1999)
I laughed once...
25 November 2000
Adam Sandler seems to becoming an acquired taste. Most people either love or hate this guy, I somehow am in the middle. My only fault with him is that he continues to play the same characters: goofballs with bad tempers who at the end have a heart of gold. "The Wedding Singer" made me laugh a good amount of times, "The Waterboy" made me laugh a few times. This film made me laugh once. Everything that goes on is so stale and silly that we've either seen it before or just don't laugh. Even with that said, this somehow(???) made 90 million dollars, so Sandler and his writing buddy Tim Herlihy will have no shortage of studio execs who are willing to give their stuff a try. This time he's paired with a friend's unknown son, who he ends up caring for until the father returns from a business trip to find out he exists. They go through an assembly line of moments; making rollerbladers crash, spraying wizz on the side of buildings, helping Sandler attract a woman. It's all too dull. The kid is even annoying most of the time, with his "I can't sleep" and puking and swearing. The cast aside from the main two is pretty good, veterans you should recognise. Adams, whose helium filled voice usually hampers her characters, is pretty enjoyable here. And Leslie Mann, though not unpleasant to look at, was totally wasted as a big boobed acquaintance of Sandler's. He drives her (and us) nuts with his endless Hooter's waitress comments. You wanna kick him in the head and say "enough already!" The one original element in the movie was the ending, which surprised me a little, but there's really nothing here to give you any fun. But don't listen to me, the thing made 90 million. And the one thing that made me laugh: the irony of the comment "a sh*tload of p*ss". Hey, I just laughed typing that. Maybe I should say this movie made me laugh twice then.
