A beautiful snoozer
2 March 2003
"Sleeping Dictionary" is a period flick (Circa 1930s) which tells the tale of a young Brit who goes to Sarawak (Malaysia) in service of the crown to educated the natives and gets a bit of an education himself in the process. A story of romance and exotic intrigues which plays out like a hokey melodrama with obvious histrionics and gratuitous picture postcard prefect scenic shots, "Sleeping Dictionary" may have some appeal to sentimentalists who can suspend disbelief at the sight of a test pattern while realists will find it too bland and too contrived. An okay day room watch for senior citizen centers. (C+)
