A waste of time, don't bother with this mess
30 April 2005
If this film was one of those direct to video productions, then movie goers missed nothing by not seeing this in the theatres. What a mess of a film this is. Historically inaccurate with a sub-plot that adds even more confusion to the continuity. The director seems fixated on the drug use and sexuality of the Family. No character background is laid out. The jump editing is irritating and overdone. One finds themselves laughing at certain points that should convey more dramatic impact. For someone unfamiliar with the Manson Family, they will remember this for the pseudo-Cinema Verite rather than a representation of one of America's grisliest crime sprees. For the best account of the murders and trial, stick with the original TV movie from 1976, "Helter Skelter" featuring Steve Railsback. Without understanding Manson, any film of this event will fail.
