SPOILERS:

I have not read the book which may explain why I didn't understand what was going on half the time. I had wanted to see Vanity Fair for quite awhile, despite not being familiar with the book.

I must say the people who advise reading the book first are probably right. This is very hard to follow. I guess it Would help to know the story. That wasn't my main problem with this though because I can enjoy movies I am also confused by. I just felt the buildup was awfully slow and the movie's length and how slowly it moved was what I had the problem with. I really didn't find the sense of fun that I expected and was lost through much of it.

On the plus side-from a visual point of view it was tops. This is a must see for those who just love period films. This is one of those movies that's the ultimate period movie from the costumes and the luscious sets, visually it was wonderful and I liked Reese Witherspoon in the role too. Probably I should not have put this on without a reading of the book first but I still doubt I'd have enjoyed this as much as expected. My vote's 6 of 10.
