Cliffhangers what memories!
8 October 2005
Sometimes I think that I am the only one still on earth who remembers the NBC "Cliffhangers" series in the spring of 1979. I was ten years old at the time and still recall it vividly. It was like the old "Perils Of Pauline" serials where you had to wait until next weeks matinée to see if the heroine would escape the "peril" she was in. Steven Spielberg said that he based Raiders Of The Lost Ark on these serials that he enjoyed as a child. Cliffhangers followed this format in three different twenty minute segments each week. My favorite was the Dracula one with Michael Nouri. Susan Anton was a top fashion model who made her movie debut in Goldengirl the year this show came out. She is a pretty face but also a capable actress and likable heroine. She plays Susan Williams a globe-trotting reporter in pursuit of her brother's killers. In the process, she gets in all kinds of trouble. She is threatened by every animal imaginable from a cobra, to a lion to a herd of elephants in Africa. The Girl Who Saved The World is a combination of the segments plus an added ending. The show was cancelled before they could air the final segment where she is trapped below Camp David with an atom bomb.
