Review of Corporate

Corporate (2006)
8/10
Surprisingly raw and frighteningly realistic! Loved the Karan Johar spoof as well!

I was advised to see Page 3 before viewing Corporate but one of my sisters went ahead and bought the DVD to Corporate last week and I had no choice but to watch it with her. :-) Sorry!

Wow! this film was as deep as it was stark, it weaves a very complex tale around the darkness that exists beneath the corporate world most specifically on this case -- the Indian corporate society.

Bipasha Basu plays Nishiganda Dasgupta, a ruthless business profession who would stop at nothing to make her team as well as her company shine and prosper. Kay Kay Menon plays Ritesh, her fiancé as well as the brother-in-law of her boss Vinay Sehgal (played by Rajat Kapoor). Together, all three as well as the rest of their team plan on winning a contract that would bring in major profits for their company, but first they up outdo and outshine the competition in doing so. When the competition wins a much coveted award, and a mysteriously shallow representative named Pervez Merchant (played by Sandeep Mehta) makes Nishi an offer she can't refuse, she decides to take him on and then virtually down for all he is worth. In doing this, she is able to steal the top secret formula for a new product that the competition is about to develop and release to the world and make her company beat them to the production of it. The product is developed but before its release is found to be contaminated, but Vinay, being the cheating, conniving and ruthless businessman that he is forces the hand of his colleagues into releasing the contaminated product to the public anyway. Look for a special cameo by Vasundhara Das, who sings the party diddle that markets the product.

Not too long down the road, the competition gets winds of the conspiracy and reports it to the police who take action. They raid Vinay's company's manufacturing depot and conduct tests which in turn reveal that the product is indeed contaminated. Fearing retribution and bankruptcy Et. Al., Vinay gangs up with his unsuspecting wife (played by Achint Kaur) and together they summon Ritesh. They tell him to get Nishi to take the fall for the company under the pretext that the would spring her free within a few weeks but little does Ritesh know that he is literally digging his own grave in doing so. Javed Akhtar, Prahlad Kakar, Raj Babbar, Lillete Dubey and Harsh Chhaya co-star in the intensely gripping drama that should win Ms. Basu and well as Kay Kay a bunch of accolades next year.

Also, look for a dead ringer spoof of director Karan Johar during the filming and direction of the "O Sikander" Sufi song during the film. A very welcome funny scene in the midst of lots of bouts of unhappiness.
