Two of a Kind (1998–1999)

The Show Would've Been Better Without The Olsen Twins
7 July 2007
The title 'two of a kind' may have been in reference to the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley, but this could have referred to the two older cast members, Kevin and Carrie played by Chris Sieber and Sally Wheeler instead. Anyhow, the sitcom revolved around Mary-Kate and Ashley- two twin girls who are being looked after and raised by their father and single parent, Kevin. He is a college professor by day, meanwhile Carrie is one of Kevin's students of whom Kevin hires as the girls's babysitter. At first, the twins and Carrie don't get along but eventually, as the series progressed their relationship evolves; likewise thus towards the end, Kevin and Carrie eventually admit having feelings for one another. It would have been intriguing to see how their relationship had fared, as well as developed, had 'Two of a Kind' remained on air. The only aspect I liked about this show was the Kevin and Carrie interaction and bond with one another, and personally speaking this sitcom would've been more watchable, not mention better, minus the Olsen twins and with just the adults as the main leads. I didn't really care much for the girls, as it was the two elder cast members of whom were much more interesting.

From what I saw in Sally Wheeler, she should have had a much better (TV) career and I would have liked to have seen her in another sitcom. It's such a shame she hasn't been getting much work, seeing as Sally is a very good comic actress and of whom deserves a sitcom of her own.

This show was okay, but that was only because of the interaction and relationship between the father/professor and female student/babysitter. If the show had centred around Sally and Kevin- of whom were arguably the stars of Two of A Kind- then more than likely it would have stood a chance.

Overall, not quite the disaster others have originally made out but ideally the Olsen twins ought to have been functioning as background characters and allowed the adults to take centre stage. Yet the writers and creators wanted to market this as the Olsen twins show, when in truth the real stars were, without a shadow of a doubt, Kevin and Carrie. Therefore, if I had things my way, i'd either choose to remove the Olsen twins and have just the pair of Kevin and Carrie, or have the Olsen twins as co-stars or supporting actors to Kevin and Carrie and build the romantic sub-plot of the show around those two.

Two of a Kind though was okay but the main problem was the twins: they took a lot away from this sitcom by being the main characters when they should've been supporting leads to the two so called adult co-stars. They demonstrated how ineffective they can be and are and in truth they were not that remotely funny compared to Chris and Sally.
