Review of Poliziotti

Poliziotti (1995)
7/10
Dark drama

Warning: Spoilers
This film is interesting, as it can't be easily categorized. It isn't a "police procedural", as the starring policemen (poliziotti) do just anything but follow procedure. It isn't "giallo", as it lacks gore dealt out by some unknown. It isn't noir, even though most action happens at night, and we have the mandatory beautiful woman with (somehow) mysterious background.

This may rather be called a deep psychological study of policemen (including family background), drug dealers (mostly Sante whom they are supposed to guard in hospital). Yes, there is shooting and other assorted violence, and nudity where appropriate, but ultimately I'd call it a drama about Italian policemen and their troubles. I liked the train scene most, which initially seems to indicate trouble, but leads to the protagonists bonding. And the many comments about rural vs. urban life. Some thrills, but don't expect a thriller. Good music pieces. I generally liked it, and might have loved it in Italian, but the 2€ Laser Paradise DVD only has German dub.
