" My life is a collection of memories, but not one has earned me enough to stay honest "

Sam Peckinpah has established a reputation for the authentic western. One where the audience can appreciate the fading hero. During the heyday of the young gunfighter, the fast draw, shooting and killing becomes the trademark. But as the years pass, it's important for that same audience to understand the toll it has taken on the aging survivor. In this film, " Ride the High Country " the director has established future precedents for the demise of the gunman. This film gives us a telling indication. Steve Judd, (Joel McCrea) an aging lawman is hired by bank owners to deliver a gold shipment. Knowing it will be dangerous and difficult, Judd hires two additional men Gil Westrum (Randolph Scott) and Heck Longtree (Ron Starr). What he doesn't suspect is, the men who are suppose to help him escort the gold are planning to rob him. In addition to his troubles, Judd is saddled with a reluctant bride Elsa Knudsen (Mariette Hartley) who is trying to escape her betrothed. If you'll look closely, you'll see a whole group of actors who will be easily recognized T.V. stars. Edgar Buchanan, R.G. Armstrong, James Drury, L.Q. Jones, John Anderson and Warren Oates. With their combined talent, it's not difficult to see why Sam Peckinpah will reassemble them in the future to create other Western memories for his audiences. Thus, this movie stands as a Classic for anyone who appreciates his endeavors. ****
