100 Years of Horror: Werewolves (1996)

Another great entry in the series. This one here takes a look at werewolves throughout the genre and starts off with WEREWOLF OF London, the first "official" werewolf film that many overlook when they discuss the genre. That's often the case because THE WOLF MAN was the masterpiece of the group and the film that made Lon Chaney, Jr. a horror legend. Chaney's other films playing the monster are discussed including FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN and the low-budget Mexican film FACE OF THE SCREAMING WEREWOLF. The 50s efforts like THE WEREWOLF are also discussed as is the creature in THE RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE.

Once again, die-hard horror fans aren't going to learn anything new here but that's really not important as once again we're treated to some great interviews and of course we get to see great clips from the movies themselves. Ralph Bellamy clearly steals the film with his nice interviews and we also get clips from Nina Foch, Hugh Hefner, Bela Lugosi, Jr. and Fred Olen Ray. At just 23-minutes there are certain films that are left out (the silent WOLF BLOOD for one) but I think this is a great introduction to new fans and will give them plenty of great titles to watch.
