Mayerling (1936)
9/10
A remarkable movie
24 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is really one remarkable movie. Yes, there are a few clichés in it, as when Prince Rudolf goes on a bender when he is first separated from Maria. The very end is also strange: why does Rudolf wait so long before taking his own life after taking Maria's? The last scene, with the music rising as he clutches for her hand after finally shooting himself, is highly romantic. The filming/sound mix would reappear again, without the romantic element, years later in another Litvak masterpiece, Sorry, Wrong Number.

But those few things cannot lessen the accomplishments of this movie, and they are many. It moves at just the right pace. There are shots that are composed with remarkable beauty, such as when Rudolf and Maria toast at dinner at Mayerling. The music is used over and over to heighten the drama, not just as background wallpaper.

And Boyer and Darrieux are both at the height of their considerable talents.

In short, a real masterpiece. One well worth seeking out.
