The Terror (1938)
4/10
Starts well but then it starts to get bogged down...

Warning: Spoilers
The film begins with a huge gold heist. Shortly after this daring and well-planned robbery, the mysterious boss contacts Scotland Yard to tell him who his accomplices were. The two men are imprisoned but the police cannot find the gold. As the years pass, the two men swear to exact vengeance upon the man who set them up for the crime.

As the pair are about to be released, the scene switches to an old mansion. Two women swear that the place is haunted but the lord of the manor ignores them. The film then becomes a rather dull haunted mansion and murder mystery picture—with the criminal leader somehow responsible for all this nonsense. The ex-prisoners arrive as does a pretty young woman. I must say that during this portion, the film bogs down considerably after such a good start. In fact, I would say it was stagy and dull. The writing is listless and the film never really established much energy.

Among the actors in the film is a young Alastair Sim and Bernard Lee ('M' from the Bond movies)—playing a surprisingly atypical sort of role.
