Manages to be even worse than ChalkZone
4 December 2011
Just for the record, I do like Nickolodean. The Angry Beavers, Rocko's Modern Life, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Ren and Stimpy are masterpieces and golden years(pre-Dil) Rugrats was great. Before, I thought ChalkZone was Nickolodean's worst, though Fanboy and Chum Chum and Rocket Power almost gave it a run for its money. Then I came across this show. Butt-ugly describes Butt-Ugly Martians quite well actually, since nothing whatsoever works about it.

It doesn't help that the concept was poor and uninteresting to begin with. And the show does little, if anything, to improve on that. The story-lines are not just dull and disjointed, they reek of corn and stupidity as well. The action scenes manage to look awkward as well, whether it was the choreography or the animation that was the problem I am not sure, my guess is a bit of both, the choreography because it looks jerky and confused and the animation because in these scenes the character designs are at their most awkward.

Faring even worse is the writing. ChalkZone, Fanboy and Chum Chum and Rocket Power may have had some lame writing, and they did, but Butt-Ugly Martians' writing is so bad it makes the aforementioned shows Emmy-worthy in comparison. The dialogue is just terrible, if I had £10 for every time I rolled my eyes watching Butt-Ugly Martians I would probably almost be a millionaire by now. The humour also stinks, just how many times do we have to hear words like "butt" and "poo"? Is it funny? Not to me, if anything it's immature and insulting to the intelligence.

Not only these, but the characters are some of Nickolodean's most irritating. As much as I don't like Timmy Turner and most of the characters of Rocket Power and all of those from ChalkZone and Fanboy and Chum Chum, they are likable compared to the annoying and severely under-developed characters in Butt-Ugly Martians. Not a single character is likable and they are hideously animated too. Speaking of the animation, I have said much about the awkward character designs, but the colours have no life or vibrancy in them and the background art is reminiscent of a badly done video game. The music is forgettable at best, and the voice work are thin and unenthusiastic, very few of the voice actors make any effort to elevate the poor material.

All in all, butt-ugly and the worst Nickolodean show ever. 0/10 Bethany Cox
