Review of The Cow

The Cow (1994)

A poignant voyage-Tangible & Cruel at the same time-Brilliant!

A tale of Love & Disgust, Ecstasy & Agony, Bond & Hatred, I mean all the ingredients of the life.

Adam is a young farmer, mentally & emotionally hurt, living with his ill mother who was a prostitute. Adam sells their only cow in exchange with the medicine for her dying mother. Rosa, a good-looking young girl comes to him to join his lonely life. They both live happily until the life goes full circle, in this rural area of former Czechoslovakia, with a bonding to their newly bought cow.

The set is beautiful and serene with lush and tranquil lives. The actors have done tremendous job and I am sure it was extremely difficult for them to shoot in these locations with real hard work. Kudos to the crew of the film for their endeavor in such a rustic manner.

A film with minimal dialogues doesn't require pages of conversation among the actors but says everything which is essential. The sentiments while fighting back with life and endurance are shown effortlessly and flawlessly. The "slice-of-life" drama is a very hard nut to crack genre to depict in a movie with all the emotional chords touched however, the director has left no stone unturned.
