Disappointing Irene Dunne
28 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
If you want to know why Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. was never in the upper echelon of acting, this film ought to show you why. His performance is just one of the reasons this is such a poor motion picture. One of the worst that I have ever seen that I watched all the way through...constantly thinking that with Irene Dunne as its star, it must get better. It didn't. Dunne was in fine form by this time in her career. Among other films with her in this general period were "Penny Serenade", "My Favorite Wife", "Love Affair", "The Awful Truth", "Theodora Goes Wild", "Show Boat", and "Magnificent Obsession". Someone goofed on this one! The story involves a "masher" (as the script calls Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. here) who is obsessed with a Broadway actress. He follows her incessantly, gets arrested, and the judge makes her his probation counselor. Yup. Kinda dumb. Of course they get married in the end. So not just dumb, but predictable.

Guy Kibbee (as Dunne's father) is rather sophisticated in this film, which is a nice change for him. Lucille Ball is the sister...and not at all impressive here. Even Jean Dixon, who usually brings fun to most any picture, is disappointing here.

The one scene in the film which could have really been fun -- at the skating rink -- was so fake looking that you simply couldn't buy into it. The script falls down just as easily as the fake skating. Pass this one by.
