Panic Room (2002)

Thriller fans - press "play"!

The best thing about Panic Room was, in my opinion, the carefully balanced combination between realistic relatable events and cinematic fiction. Long before Saw portrayed a story taking place in maybe the cheapest single location in the history of the business (and became an all time hit), Panic Room used pretty much the same aspect.

A claustrophobic mother and a diabetic daughter, locked in a seemingly impenetrable room after burglars have broken into their house. Both little Kristen Stewart and world famous Jodie Foster performed their roles very well. We also got to see Forest Whitaker (which is always a treat in my book), this time as one of the bad guys! However, writer Koepp and director Flincher were well aware that Whitaker has the "good guy" face and charisma, and made sure to use that too.

The movie lacked a twist, if you ask me, which would have made it a much better thriller. Something smart to happen towards the end that the audience had no way of seeing coming. As it is, Panic Room had very few violent bloody scenes, and could have easily been rated PG-13 (so the F word is used more than once, so what?)

All in all, Panic Room was a fun film which I really enjoyed watching. A good ol' fashion thriller with all the makings of a classic. Though it could have been a lot better, I'd still say it was definitely worth watching if you're a thriller fan!
