I had a lot of high expectations for season two of American Horror Story, and perhaps this is where it has come unstuck in that season one set the bar far too high.
Season one was set a very high standard, setting itself in a horror genre very similar the films of the nineteen seventies, films like Rosemary's Baby, and Psycho, where we were afraid of what we could not see. This was further strengthened by the strong cast, and the intermingled plot lines.
Where season one set itself firmly in this genre, season two has gone ahead and completely changed the genre, to the more visceral bloody horror of the nineteen eighties: zombies; exorcisms; Nazis; and space aliens.
Whereas season one owed more to Roman Polanski, season two owes more to the more bloody films of Wes Craven. That season two is set in an insane asylum, where some of the actors from season one have been thrown in with new personalities and agendas, pushes season two into the ultimate 1980's horror mash-up.
Granted many may say that season two is not as polished as season one, but as a stand alone work, season 2 is bloody and visceral, and what it lacks in scariness, it certainly makes up for in shock value. Going by this trend, season 3 will probably be set in the nineteen nineties style of horror... Wes Craven without the blood?
