What's with this little movie's lousy ratings? I honestly loved it, although I was expecting a slasher movie and this turned out to be a small-town mystery, it didn't disappoint at all! Melissa is fifteen (going on sixteen soon), and has just moved to a rural Texas town, desperate to meet new friends. She unfortunately meets some older guys who are kind of pervy, and witnesses first-hand the horrible racism the town aims towards the Native American community, mainly Greyfeather and Jason, a father and son who are both concerned about Melissa hanging around with bad company and advise her to go home. Nevertheless she gets a drive from the guys and things get weird, until her strict dad breaks up the party.

The next day Melissa finds out that one of the gang was murdered... and it isn't long before the curious teens at her new high school start pointing the finger at her.

One thing I have to say is, whether the movie had been good or bad, I love the soundtrack! The haunting intro theme is the kind of nostalgic music you just don't hear in movies anymore. Where I live the first nations community is still treated with prejudice sometimes, so it was great seeing a movie that didn't make Greyfeather and Jason out to be "savages" or "animals" as some movies do. The acting was excellent, the scenery was amazing, the plot was original and I absolutely loved it.

Contrary to what other reviewers suggest, I highly recommend Sweet Sixteen. Just don't watch it expecting some Friday the 13th copycat because although it is labeled as such, it's more a mystery than a slasher. Just watch it with an open mind, you might find yourself very surprised.
