My guess is that false sense of teenage immortality still feels real in your early 20's. This film puts it on display, and surrounds high school kids with enough weapons : knives, chainsaws, drugs that one feels the high school bubble of protection will pop.
Does it? Watch for yourself but I wouldn't make this a high priority watch. As an ever-aging being (I was probably born too old to even "enjoy" this film when I was in high school), it is less than ideal when all adults are morons or malicious. That only works in cartoons.
Watching the DVD bonus made me wonder if there was an interesting parallel between director Gia and male ingenue little Kilmer aligned with the Frano's soccer coach and his babysitter/striker. But I didn't wonder too much.
The film's cinematography shows Coppola DNA in action, and there's a slightly too pretty to be verite feeling at times that made the film even more watchable. Probably won't read Franco's book, but I do like that he felt Gia Coppola was the right one to direct this.
I give it a 6/10, beats the Kids from Fame (and Kids from Harmony Korine as well). I hope the quest for sweetness that I felt sneaking out of the movie wasn't meant to be ironic.
