Marvin & Tige (1983)
9/10
Great Little Indie Flick!
22 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this little 1983 indie flick awhile back (also known as "Like Father and Son"), and it stuck with me so much, I went looking for it again recently. To my surprise, it had never been released on DVD, however, I got to see it off my Amazon Prime subscription! Going into it a second time, I remember thinking it was going to disappoint in the re- watch, but I was wrong.

The late John Cassavetes stars as a heavy-drinking widower, Marvin, who ekes out a living doing odd jobs (mostly collecting cans), and then comes across a suicidal youngster, Tighe (Gibram Brown, who should've received an academy award for his performance!). He then takes him into his home, and the two become roommates and pals. The two have their occasional spats- in fact, there were times I remember thinking, okay THAT they couldn't get away with on film today-?? I can just see them remaking this film for today's audiences- how "sugar-coated" the whole thing would be. Billie Dee Williams also has a small role in the film as Tighe's biological father.
