It's a send up of Secret Army.I get that.However what militates against the potential jokes are these incomprehensible plot lines all performed by a group of rather ordinary actors.The scripts being so devoid of wit, its place is filled full of mirthless,racial and sexual stereotypes involved either in cross dressing or unlikely love triangles.The central tropes of the mispronouncing gendarme plus the tirelessly lovesick waitresses(it's the sex mad French,you see) involved with the decidedly plain and overweight Rene are ,most aptly, flogged mercilessly.
Apart from the clunky story lines, the bigger mystery is the reverence in which this sitcom is held.Sorry, it's not you,it's me.I don't get the joke.If there ever was one.
