Shaman King (2001–2005)

Great potential, but that's it

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not comparing the Anime/Manga and I'm not comparing Japan/En version. Just the English show as it is.

First of all, I've really enjoyed the show , when I was a kid, but I did remember something seemed off at the end of it all. I've just re-watched it, and there's too many stuff that is badly made.

While the story could've been amazing, too many things don't add up and/or are left behind. Since I don't wanna make this too long I'l just make a quick bullet-point list:

  • The spirit fusion by Joco was shown once, and was left behind. - Too few moves - Celestial Slash - and that's it. - (almost) no love story/not developed one. Considering the main characters are teens, would've been quite appropriate (despite the ~2 months series span). - The overall structure was dull with a lot of "filling" moments. Few episodes introducing characters, few for the first round, 30-40 searching Dobi Village with a lot of gibberish in between, and a mediocre 2nd round/ending. - The Shaman King Tournament structure was bad on it's own. Two rounds for ALL the shamans IN THE WORLD!? - Somewhat uneven distribution of power gaining. Yoh is gaining power as it's nothing. Round 1 Yoh, would've been kicked by everyone from round 2. - With the furioko meter, they could've at least said what was Yoh power level, just because. - Zeke had mastered pretty much everything, though we saw his water elemental spirit just for a minute or two? Not to mention the other 3 spirits that we didn't see. - Zeke Didn't have even one signature move? For 1000 years? - He needed Yoh really badly, but still he just ate the Spirit King even without him? - We never saw the Spirit King? - The spirit king was just a weakling that Zeke ate like it was nothing? 1000 years vs eternity? - Almost no character development if we don't count Lemmy? - We got almost nothing from the back-story of the shamans and the spirits? - The 1080 beads were there because of...? - What happened with all the characters in the end? The pink haired girl that like Yoh? - The final battle was Mediocre AT BEST! - If Zeke is Destroyed where does the Spirit King go? - And overall, there could've been a lot more story, suspense, fight moves for 64 episodes.

On the plus side the show had a good concept and it was p(h)unny + some good characters.

I'll read the Manga at some point and hope for the best, because the show left me utterly disappointed.
