Fuller House (2016–2020)

Relatively Enjoyable, Doesn't Stand Out (Some Spoilers)

Warning: Spoilers
When I found out that they were making this I had mixed feelings of happy nostalgia and preemptive disappointment. While the child in me wants this to make it due to fond memories of watching the original, another part of me was sure it would be horrible. It turned out to be a mix.

It's cute and family friendly. There were some adult jokes mixed in that my 5 year old didn't understand. I don't recall hearing swear words, maybe 'Oh my god', which I do not consider swearing but others will. If you are sensitive to either of those then it may not be your show.

There were a few good laughing points, though not as many as I would hope. Unfortunately most of the jokes were drowned out by the horrible laugh track (or audience, whichever). They seemed to be really relying on old jokes from the original to help them get going. Jokes that die hards might get, or if you watch the original which is also on Netflix.

The main reason I don't deem it worthy of a higher rating is because it was so forced it was awkward. Even the jokes that were funny were not so because of their delivery. The chemistry between the actors was virtually null. The acting was sub par and at times grating. It felt like they were trying a touch too hard to hit the heart and fun of the original that they forgot to have a voice of their own. It was better by the last episode and I hope that it finds itself if it gets a second season. They need to stop trying so hard to be Full House, and come up with some ideas of their own.

The other major gripe I had, and the reason I marked this for possible spoilers, was DJ's relationships. It's not that she should never date, it's just that it seemed way too early to be adding in romantic interests. Why not spend more time on the family and getting to know the new cast/characters, and seeing them bond as a new family? Why jump straight into romantic entanglements? Maybe I missed the time-line as well but is it not a bit early? How long has her husband been gone that she's falling for these guys and her children have hardly a reaction? They miss their dad but are not at all upset that their mom is already moving on? I've never been through this so maybe I just don't understand but it seemed too much. Maybe in the second season when things are established, but barely even half way in? Too quick.

I'm glad they resolved it the way they did, but even that was cliché and predictable. The guys were great, and the way it happened was cute. It was just too much in a short time. Maybe they were worried that they won't get a second season and wanted to make sure they got as much of the story in as possible? Kimmy was crazy and weird as always. The issue I found there was her husband. Fernando? He was over the top cliché, and again another forced romantic storyline. Their feelings for each other were understandable, in that they were married and having second thoughts, but it was again too quick. Hardly a lead up, not much for resolution in how the relationship failed before but will magically work now. They care for each other and share a child, great, but it takes more than that to make a relationship work.

My last note is about the laugh track or audience: the first episode it was okay, each time things were mentioned from the original or someone showed up, they went crazy clapping and yelling. This was fine but became irritating in later episodes. The over the top reactions just made things feel even more forced and less natural. Yes it's nice when the original actors come in but every time? And that crazy? It was unnecessary and I hope it stops. We get it, the original was good, and it's nice to see familiar faces but shush already! Overall I found it extremely forced, a bit awkward and good for a light hearted non-committal watch as long as you can overlook it's flaws (and turn your ears off periodically). Do not expect the same endearing level of the first, I'm watching that currently and while it's campy and very 90's it was original, cute and natural.
