L.A. Story (1991)

satirical look at L.A.
7 September 2016
Harris K. Telemacher (Steve Martin) does wacky weather for local TV in Los Angeles. His girlfriend Trudi (Marilu Henner) is coldheartedly ambitious. He falls for London journalist Sara McDowel (Victoria Tennant) who is trying to reconnect with her ex-husband Roland Mackey (Richard E. Grant). He starts dating SanDeE* (Sarah Jessica Parker) who works at a hip clothing store. An electronic traffic sign starts a conversation with him. It gives him cryptic messages as he tries to find meaningful living.

It's a satirical look at L.A. life. It is biting and fun. The wackiness and cartoonism can overwhelm at times. Steve Martin is likable enough. The basic rom-com gets a little short shrift. Victoria Tennant needs a little bit more to do. She's nice and normal. In a world of stormy chaos, she is a bit of calm but she can also be blown away. The love story may work better if it's concentrated between Tennant and SanDeE*. I don't think Trudi is necessary. It may be better for Harris to be terribly lonely at the beginning.
