Review of Summer Catch

Summer Catch (2001)
3/10
pretty awful
6 October 2018
I'd never seen this movie, but I'd heard of it as the movie that kind of kicked off Freddie Prinze Jr's career, so when I saw that it was available on Netflix I thought I'd give it a watch. It's not very good.

The movie has a number of charismatic actors that should have made it a better movie, but the tone of the film is all over the map making it kind of a mess. The movie just seems like it can't quite decide what it wants to be: a sports flick, a romantic comedy, a film about class struggles, or a raunchy sex film. It tries to be all of these things and ends up not really succeeding at any of them.

The dialogue is almost entirely stilted and awkward, making it frustrating to watch; it often feels like the direction for the actors was "just go out there and be moody and obnoxious". Jokes frequently don't land, or in the case of a whole line of fat-girl jokes, haven't aged very well. And then every once in a while there is a big over-the-top emotional scene where they chew the scenery trying to be overly dramatic that feels unearned.

The one positive thing I can say is that the cast is really easy on the eyes, particularly Jessica Biel who is about as beautiful as a woman can get in this movie. It's too bad, it feels like a missed opportunity. If they had just tightened up the script and focused the story it might have been halfway decent. But as it is it isn't worth watching even for free.
