Review of Snow Day

Snow Day (2000)
5/10
could work but don't

Tom Brandston (Chevy Chase) is the third rate TV meteorologist in Syracuse, New York. His son Hal is obsessed with Claire Bonner who just broke up with annoying Chuck. His daughter Natalie and her friends battle their winter-hating teacher and their great nemesis, the snow plow man (Chris Elliott). He gives Natalie a snow globe which brings on the snow day. His wife Laura (Jean Smart) is forced to stay home from her job to take care of their youngest.

For one shining moment, I thought this movie could be smarter than I give it credit. With Lane gushing over her friend Hal to Claire, the story could have turned with Claire asking if Lane actually likes Hal. Instead of continuing with the standard guy chases girl, Claire could turn the tables and help Lane get Hal. This movie could never be smarter than expected. The kiddie story would work if this is strictly a kiddie movie. It insists on pursuing the teenage romance which doesn't really fit the kiddie tone. It's a little sad to see Chevy Chase be reduced to this and be overshadowed. As for Iggy Pop, he's got to pick his projects sober. This movie needs to split up like Claire and Chuck. The kiddie story could work and the teen romance could work. They just can't work together.
