Decoy: Across the World (1958)
Season 1, Episode 20
A Few Observations

I'll leave the plot recap to fellow reviewer Kapel. Instead, what follows are a few remarks on this unexceptional though entertaining entry. Casey doesn't get much screen time, most going to the plotters. Thus Garland fans may be a little disappointed, myself included. However, the series strength with location shooting is once again in evidence-- a really seedy and atmospheric wharf-side area. No glamour anywhere in this 30-minutes. Also, there's more action (fisticuffs) than usual, though rather poorly staged. Note too how the force that the illegal armaments are being smuggled to remains unidentified. I guess the force must be soviet-related since TV wouldn't want bad guys smuggling arms to Cold War good guys.

And catch what may be the only instances on 50's TV of cold weather misty breathing. The crew must have been filming outdoors during really cold weather, another realistic aspect. Then too, the series notes said the production crew often wore heavy sweaters under heavy coats. But the cast often had to stay in character, so no extra insulation for them-- hope they got extra pay.

All in all, it's an okay story with a really good look at seedier, cold weather parts of NYC.
