My Left Foot (1989)
7/10
A phenomenal performance

If you ever want to watch an incredible acting performance (that is the ultimate showcase of method acting), then check out My Left Foot. Daniel Day Lewis is incredible throughout and well deserving of his Oscar here. Hugh O'Conor was also incredible (and somewhat under-appreciated) as the young Christy Brown.

The pigeon lady from Home Alone 2 (Brenda Fricker) has probably played the kindest characters I've seen in film. Any scene with her and Daniel Day Lewis was instantly heartwarming. The film itself was quite inspirational, without shoving it down your throat or being too sentimental. Emotional me surprisingly didn't shed a tear, which is probably testament to the film not dwelling on sentimental, cheery sweetness.

Some of the downsides were that it took a while for me to get into it. It was mostly bleak and quite grim in both tone and lighting choices which didn't always make it easy to watch. The ending, along with some of the storyline choices didn't always float my boat either.

My Left Foot has definitely given me a whole new appreciation for not only the art of acting, but Daniel Day Lewis and Christy Brown themselves. It makes me want to go read the book it's based on now.

Recommend for those after something a little inspirational, Irish or that is simply a showcase of stellar acting.
