Well, at least the animation is incredible...

I can't help but wonder what besieged the production company to spend $137 million on this animated film. Sure, it looks fantastic, but their hopes for this ambitious project were obviously much too high. The film could also only earn back $85 million, deeming it a box office flop.

I must be honest, the fact that 'Final Fantasy' boosts incredible animation, unfortunately could not redeem this film for me. Not only are the characters cliched - just the way Hollywood likes them! - but the film in general is sci-fi cliche upon action cliche. Why would I watch this film instead of 'Aliens' for example? Or even 'Prometheus', or 'Terminator 2', or, or, or... The story of 'Final Fantasy' is also very confusing. I didn't really understand the Aki Ross character. (If you're a gamer familiar with the game, you might understand it better, but from a non-gamer perspective watching a movie, it didn't make sense. Let alone that confusing ending with Captain Gray Edwards. I had to read up on the film just to understand why he had the power to transform the evil spirits to good, or whatever the hell happened, I'm still not entirely sure). I think there's supposed to be a deeper meaning here, but for the life of me I have no idea what it is.

Ah, yes, and then there's the antagonist. No, not the spirits, I'm referring to General Hein. His character is so weak, I wonder how he possibly became General. He makes mistake upon mistake, which makes him incompetent instead of a contender as antagonist.

Would I watch it again? Uhm, no...
