Vera Cruz (1954)
3/10
Very slow paced

If you really like Mexican westerns, you're going to want to check out Vera Cruz, starring Burt Lancaster and Gary Cooper. I'm not a Coop fan, but I was excited to see Cesar Romero in the supporting cast. Burt and Gary are lone wolves who team up during the Mexican Civil War, and Cesar hires them to watch over Denise Darcel, a countess. Of course they both fall for her, but which one will she choose? You'll have to sit through the entire movie to find out.

The movie has a slower pace than most, and Hugo Friedhofer's pretty music adds to the lazy feeling. I was mostly bored to tears, but the beginning is interesting. Gary and Burt have a fun meet-cute and end up being chased by bad guys together, but after Burt asks for his "hundred bucks" with a huge grin and an open hand, the movie goes downhill. It's funny, since this movie predates The Rainmaker by two years, but all the hundreds of flashy grins he gives the camera aren't enough to save the movie. It's a boring western that will make you avoid the genre for a while.
