2/10
To begin I couldn't be more pleased but it went downhill
3 September 2020
I watched the original back in the 80's and also read all the books. I wasn't expecting much to be honest but the first episode was quite good. Then as the series progressed I got more and more critical of the series and always found myself comparing to the original BBC series.

This one sadly is missing all of the charm and humour (and real sadness and grittiness) of the original. The farm/animal scenes have been sanitised to the point where there is not the slightest whiff of reality as in the original - in the original you knew the actors were actually putting their hand up a cows rear and it was all the better an more realistic for it. Some of the original scenes of delivering a calf etc. were the best aspects and made it feel alive. All gone.

This new adaptation is all about the romantic entaglements and has been rather ruined by the lack of farm reality. The only saving grace is the scenery and the old cars. Apart from that it really has nothing to do with the books.

Margaretta Scott cannot be matched as Mrs Pomphery in the original sadly and I dread the episode when they bring in Mr Biggins as John sharp was a real star of the original and will never be bettered in terms of his dry humour and facial expressions.

All this has done is made me want to download the original series (again) and watch it (again for the 10th time).
