The first half of Charmed is amazing. A show about sisters that happen to be witches, focus on wicca, a dark tone and love stories you cared about, and even after replacing the (arguably) best character after season 3, it still worked and they had a great season with Paige.
But then season 5 happened. The vast change of tone and focus is highly noticable, and the overall worst change is that the writers forgot they were sisters, and only focused on soapy, romantic stories for all sisters. I enjoyed season 5 up until they killed off Cole. His return overall was kind of uneccessary, but I loved the character and was fine with it. After he died the last time however, the show completely went off the rails into sillyness for me. The fairytale and woodland creatures and the God awful magic school was their jumping the shark moment, and they never really recovered. All of us true fans knows this is Brad Kern's fault, as he wanted to focus more on campy and risque outfits and love stories, rather than the sisterhood. Constance M. Burke really understood and made the good parts of the show, so when she left the overall quality spiraled. It got too silly, childish, drawn out and boring.
I read that season 4 was supposed to be all about defeating the source, and season 5 was supposed to be about Phoebe being pregnant and turning into the queen of the underworld, ending with her killing Cole. Pair that with Piper getting pregnant and the end, and they should have wrapped the show there. It would have been perfect.
I liked all seasons growing up, but rewatching it as an adult it's obvious when the overall quality declined, and it's a shame. It doesn't help that these new creators of CW's Charmed had a chance of bringing back the OG cast and make a good Charmed reboot, but instead made a travesty of a show aimed to preteens that only capitalized on the Charmed name.
