Dante Alighieri's classic work "The Divine Comedy" contrasts heaven and hell. With his depiction of the latter, he proscribed horrific punishment for the corrupt and wicked, with their vicious deeds coming back to haunt them (Pablo Neruda also did this with his depiction of Francisco Franco in hell).
The 1911 adaptation of Dante's work is a lovable shocker. If this stuff is shocking to us nowadays, imagine how it looked over 100 years ago. Whatever the case, it has to be seen to be believed (I watched it on Wikipedia). Enjoy!
