A slow burner and odd casting for Pyle, but otherwise a gripping story
26 November 2020
Though the Quiet American establishes itself as a very dialogue-heavy film, owing to its origins as a novel that I have yet to read entirely, the concept alone of a Vietnam film set BEFORE American intervention and during French occupation is truly a fascinating one.

Perhaps even more baffling is that the book its based on effectively preached the dangers of American intervention in Indochina several years before their actual involvement, essentially predicting the American Vietnam war.

What the film makes up for in its initial slow pace is in its amazing third act, full of revelation, dilemma and deceit. Additional points should go to the beautiful soundtrack and pretty good acting all-around. Even Brendan Fraser, who was kind of miscast in this role does a great job.

Overall a slow film, but well worth the watch just for the twist alone.
