Review of Scrooge

Scrooge (1935)
6/10
Nice and crackly but not great
24 December 2020
Every Xmas I watch at least one movie adaptation of the famous Charles Dickens novel, I have to confess that I had until now never seen or even heard of this version. I have just watched the 78 minute print. I do believe that black and white suits the story best, the 1951 version is in my opinion the best (I detest the colourised print). This version is what I call crackly and I mean that in a good way, the outdoor sets do look good covered in snow and there is much indoor use of shadows. What lets in down is for me is that unlike other versions we barely see the ghosts, the first haunting with Jacob Marley sees old Scrooge talking to an empty chair. Another thing is the additional scenes of Xmas celebrations, on board a ship at sea, at a banquet being hosted by the Mayor of London, and so on, I couldn't see the point. Sir Seymour Hicks does make a grumpy old miser though.
