An original, endearing coming-out movie.

This is an endearing, sympathetic movie about an in itself serious topic: the question if you should come-out as gay to your extremely conservative and homophobic parents. Here it's dealt with in a very intelligent way and with much humor, resulting in a rewarding mixture of laughs and tears. Maybe both parents stay a bit too much a caricature, especially the father, but the frustrations of main character Tomasso as the closeted son is very realistically pictured by actor Riccardo Scamarcio.

Some scenes seemed less relevant (like the diabetic grandmother eating herself to death), and I didn't care much for the visiting gay friends, their scenes did cause some extra laughs but more of the easy kind, by picturing them (rather cliché) as a bunch of bickering and prancing queens. And I didn't quite grasp the metaphors of the opening- and closing-sequences, these flashbacks from grandmother's past, they were visually beautiful, but also stayed a bit enigmatic (or it's just me being too simple minded).

What I did like in the end, was that Tommaso eventually didn't come out as gay at all, because by that time it felt as if being gay or not, as well as telling people about it, wasn't even important anymore. Which is exactly as it should be (in an ideal world).
