Claudine (1974)

Diahann was better as Julia!

When I first watched this movie, I immediately noticed that Diahann didn't look as pretty as usual. They had to have intentionally made her look not-so-pretty. Diahann Carroll was a beautiful woman. Such a beautiful woman is not entirely believable as a mother of six, on welfare. Another thing that wasn't believable was James Earl Jones as Claudine's love interest. There was an obvious attempt to tone down Diahann's natural beauty. It didn't exactly work, though. She was a hundred times too nice for Jones. It's a matter of personal taste, but I didn't like very much about the film. The kids were annoying and unlikeable. The story is not entirely convincing, mostly due to Diahann Carroll's casting. She was just too pretty and too classy to be believable in this role. There is one scene that I like alot, however. Diahann is in the bathtub, and we get some flashes of nudity. I loved it! One of the sexiest things I've ever watched. That scene is the reason I gave the movie 7 stars, instead of only 4.
